لا بدَّ في النَّاسِ للأسماءِ مِن أثَرِ

كيوسُفِ النَّصر فانظُرْ مَوضعَ النَّظَرِ

There must be some effect of names on people

Like Joseph's name suggesting victory, so consider

قد نالَ مِن يُوسُفٍ مَعنَى الجَمالِ كما

حَوَى مِن النَّصر مَعنَى الفوزِ والظَّفَرِ

He got from Joseph a sense of beauty, and contained

From victory a sense of winning and triumph

كريمُ قومٍ لقد باتتْ قرينتُهُ

كريمةً مِن ذواتِ الحُسْنِ والخَفَرِ

A generous tribe, his companion definitely became

A generous one of beauty and splendor

في طالعٍ قالَ تأريخُ السُّعودِ بِهِ

في منزلِ البدرِ حَلَتْ نجمةُ السَّحَرِ
