His love made me drink a goblet to the dregs
So it intoxicated me and my friends
And my heart knew not the old intoxication
By it though it would know if it became sober
The heart of a gentle one it possessed
So wondrous! And it likes not to be set free
If the beloved is gentle and conveys meaning
Gentleness, agreeableness and pleasure intensified
A beauty I spent my patience upon
At his hands so I perfected the accord
My heart yearns to him while it is with him
And fears melting so we no longer meet
A healer whom death cannot take
His patient’s blood except by stealth
If he neglected the cure, he would compensate for it
With something sweeter or better taste
A youth the invalid plays when he comes to him
Forgetting what afflicted him so he could not bear
And he is about to fear the absence of sickness
Fearing to experience his absence
