My longing grew long for this separation

I wonder, will there ever be a reunion?

Whenever hope drew near, fate pushed it away

We are all left wandering and lost

The fire of that beloved life faded out

Woe to me! Not even embers remain

The mounts are now still of riders

    And the neighing steeds

Thus is the nature of fate, nothing lasts

If only we lived in the days of the ancient 'Aad

Just as no good times last with fate

    No bad times endure either

If only this era could see in us

What we saw in it, so it finds guidance in judging

The enemies did not strike us with arrows

Making us the target of envious eyes

O traveler, who came between hearts and minds

We never heard of a more desolate departure even among foes

Perhaps the injustice you faced surprised them

And made them wonder - will he ever return?

They knew you were but an envoy of the father

So they recoiled from their malice

    The horizons narrowed without you

No place left for a camel to kneel in this land

As if the land was a body without a soul

    Or an eyelid without kohl

O Kulayb, after you, a fire was lit

Melting even the stones of the living

And the people regained courage after you all

Every sword now as sharp as an Indian blade

You're peerless, but I do not

Give you the station of odd numbers

You were an epoch that built, your legacy

Does not make us need hosts or numbers

A gaze from you, even in dreams, inspires awe

    Feared even in sweet slumber

The days did not diminish you

Except as old age diminishes the youthful knight

We sought to grasp your greatness in descriptions

Like a tower bound by stakes

What can they exaggerate when they cannot reach

    Justice even after striving?

Among the generous, you are the crown jewel

Facing hardships, a boulder in the valley

In the meadow, you are the flower of spring

And the best part of all blossoms

    People pride themselves on ancestors

But you are the pride of fathers and forefathers

One associated with you boasts though

He is but the son of one called Ziyad

You are the accomplished poet sung

In every verse people delight to chant

Poetry boasts glory through you so much

It would shy if you wrote it in ink

No praise fits you except that

Which befits no mortal among all God's creation

Every poem is a garment to the measure

Of the wearer, tailored by hands
