1. نحنُ التُّرابُ إلى تُرابٍ نَرِجعُ

    وهُناكَ نحصُدُ تحتهُ ما نَزرَعُ

    We are but dust, returning to dust

    And there we reap what we sow

  2. يا جامِعَ الأموالِ طولَ حياتهِ

    أينَ الذي بالأمسِ كنَّا نَجمَعُ

    O gatherer of wealth all your life

    Where is what we gathered yesterday?

  3. لو كانتِ الدُّنيا لشخصٍ واحدٍ

    ما زالَ في طَلَبِ الزَّيادةِ يَطمَعُ

    If the world belonged to one person

    He would still be greedy for more

  4. فإذا أتاهُ الموتُ أفرغَ مُلكَهُ

    منها فصارَ بقيدِ باعٍ يَقنَعُ

    But when death comes to him

    He empties his kingdom unwillingly

  5. مِن صالحِ الأعمالِ حَبَّةُ خردلٍ

    أغنى من الكَنزِ العظيمِ وأنفَعُ

    A tiny seed of good deeds

    Is richer and more beneficial than a great treasure

  6. هذا رفيقُكَ في الطَّريقِ وغيرهُ

    يمضي فليسَ تراهُ حينَ تُوَدِّعُ

    This is your companion on the road while others

    Depart, and you won’t see them when they bid farewell

  7. ما لي أُنادي واعظاً وأنا الذي

    أحتاجُ وَعظاً للمسامعِ يَقرَعُ

    Why do I preach when I’m the one

    Who needs preaching that strikes the ears

  8. إنِّي أرى عِبَراً كأنِّي لا أرى

    وإذا سمعتُ كأنَّني لا أسمَعُ

    I see lessons yet I do not see

    And when I hear it's as if I do not hear

  9. كم ناصحٍ يَنهَى أخاهُ عن الذي

    هُوَ كلَّ يومٍ لا محالَةَ يَصنَعُ

    How many advisers forbid their brother

    What he inevitably commits every day

  10. ما زالَ يعذِرُ نفسَهُ في فعلِهِ

    ويلومُ فاعِلَهُ عليهِ ويَردَعُ

    He still excuses himself for his actions

    And blames the doer and deters him

  11. دُنياكَ أشبَهُ بالعروسِ تَبَرُّجاً

    لكنْ علينا لا عليها البُرقُعُ

    Your world is like a flirtatious bride

    But the veil is upon us, not her

  12. فتَّانةُ الألبابِ تخدَعُ أهلَها

    كالسِّحرِ يُطِغي مَن يَراهُ ويَخدَعُ

    The seducer of minds deceives its people

    Like magic overwhelming those who see it and duping them

  13. شابتْ كما شِبنا ولم يَكُ عِندنا

    للزُّهْدِ والسِّلوانِ عنها مَوْضِعُ

    It grew old as we grew old but we never

    Had opportunity for asceticism and solitude

  14. في قلبِ كلِّ فتىً عليها صَبوةٌ

    تلقَى صبابَتَها الرُّؤُوسَ فتَصدَعُ

    In the heart of every young man

    Is an obsession with it, and it shakes the minds

  15. وإذا الصَّبابَةُ خَيَّمَتْ في ساحةٍ

    ضاقتْ بموكِبها الجهاتُ الأربَعُ

    When the infatuation spreads in an arena

    The four directions become too narrow for its procession

  16. غَلَبَتْ صبابتُنا العُقولَ فنالنا

    شِبهُ الجُنونِ بهِ نقومُ فَنُصرَعُ

    Our obsession overpowered our minds so we gained

    A touch of madness with which we stand up and collapse

  17. والشَّيخُ أشبَهُ بالغُلامِ كلاهُما

    حتَّى المماتِ بها شجيٌّ مُولعُ

    The old man resembles the young man, both

    Passionately enamored with it until death

  18. يا يوسفَ الجلخِ الذي فارقْتَنا

    أسفاً فِراقَ مهاجرٍ لا يَرجعُ

    Oh Youssef, you well-mannered one who left us

    With great sorrow like an emigrant who does not return

  19. أنتَ الرَّخيمُ على ضَريحِكَ رحمةٌ

    تَسقي ثَراهُ كما سَقتهُ الأدمُعُ

    You are merciful even over your grave

    Your tomb drinks tears as it once drank milk

  20. قد كنتَ ترفُقُ بالفقير ولم يكُنْ

    في مالِ أربابِ الغِنَى لكَ مَطمَعُ

    You were kind to the poor yet you never

    Coveted the money of the wealthy

  21. والأنسُ عندَكَ واللطافةُ رُبَّما

    تَشفي المريضَ بطيبِ نفسٍ تَصنَعُ

    Comfort and amiability were yours, sometimes

    Healing the sick with your good spirit

  22. خُلُقٌ تخلَّفَ عن أبيكَ وَرِثتَهُ

    مذ كنتَ في الأحضانْ طِفلاً تُرضَعُ

    A trait inherited from your father

    Since you were an infant suckling milk

  23. ما زالَ يَدفَعُ طِبُّكَ الدَّاءَ الذي

    لمَّا أصابكَ لم تَجِدْ ما يَدفَعُ

    It continued to cure the illness which when

    It afflicted you, you could not find a cure

  24. لبيَّتَ فَوْراً دَعوةَ المَلِكِ الذي

    كلُّ النُّفوسِ لهُ جميعاً تَخضَعُ

    You immediately answered the call of the King

    To whom all souls submit

  25. وقَبِلتَ طَوعاً أمرَ مَن أرضيتَهُ

    وعلى رِضاهُ مَضَى زَمانُكَ أجمَعُ

    And you willingly accepted the order of Him whom you pleased

    And your whole life passed pleasing Him

  26. وكان يَبقَى مَن تَوَدُّ الناسُ أنْ

    يحيا بَقيتَ ولم يَمسَّكَ مَصرَعُ

    And those whom people wish would live

    Stayed while death did not touch them

  27. لكنْ عَهدِنا البينَ في غَفَلاتهِ

    يَنسَى الذينَ حياتُهم لا تَنفَعُ

    But in its neglect our fleeting world

    Forgets those whose lives are of no use
