1. ورداً على الخدِّ لا ورداً ببُستانِ

    يليقُ بالزَّهرِ أن يدعو بسلطانِ

    A rose on the cheek, not a rose in the garden

    It suits the flower to call with authority

  2. كم بينَ وردٍ يدومُ الدَّهرَ مُبتسماً

    ووردةٍ ليسَ تعدو شهر نَيْسانِ

    How many roses last forever smiling

    While a rose does not exceed the month of April

  3. وردٌ قطفناهُ بالأبصارِ واعَجَبا

    من وجنةٍ ذاتِ أمواهٍ ونيرانِ

    A rose we plucked with sights and amazed

    From a cheek of waters and fires

  4. حيَّا بها رشأٌ تُحيي تحيَّتهُ

    ويَفتِنُ اللَّحظُ منهُ كلَّ فَتَّانِ

    It greeted an infant, greeting revives

    And glance is tempted by it every coquette

  5. رَيَّانُ يأنَفُ من تَشبيهِ قامتهِ

    جَهلاً بعُودِ القَنا فضلاً عن البانِ

    A gazelle disdains likening its stature

    Ignorantly preferring cane to acacia

  6. تَلقَى ثَناياهُ مِن كأسٍ بها حَبَبٌ

    دُرّاً بدُرٍّ ومَرجاناً بمَرجانِ

    Its folds met from a cup wherein is a loved one

    Pearl to pearl and coral to coral

  7. في صَحْنِ خَدَّيهِ قد خَطَّ العِذارُ كما

    قد خَطَّ في صَحنِ خدِّي دمعُ أجفاني

    On its cheek marks, just as

    My eyelids tears marked on my cheek

  8. فقال والتِّيهُ يَثني مِن معَاطِفِهِ

    خَطُّ ابنِ مُقلةَ لاقَى خَطَّ رَيْحانِ

    It said and the lost one folds his cloak

    Ibn Muqla’s line met Raihan’s line

  9. أشكو هواهُ فيشكو من هوايَ لهُ

    فكانَ يُضحِكُني مِن حيثُ أبكاني

    I complain of his love so he complains of mine to him

    So he made me laugh when he made me cry

  10. كأنَّهُ وهْو في الدَّعوى يُعارِضُني

    تَلقَّفَ الفِقْهَ عن مولايَ شروانِ

    As if he, while arguing with me

    Took jurisprudence from my master Sharwan

  11. مولَى الموالي الذي طابتْ سريرَتُهُ

    وقامَ بالحقِّ في سِرٍّ وإعلانِ

    Master of masters, delighted his mattress

    And stood by the truth secretly and openly

  12. قد خُطَّ في قلبهِ المبرورِ من أدبٍ

    ما خَطَّ في اللَّوحِ عُثمانُ بنُ عَفَّانِ

    Inscribed in his blessed heart some discipline

    Unlike what was inscribed by Uthman ibn Affan

  13. في صَدرهِ نورُ علمٍ زانَهُ عَملٌ

    مِثلَ الثِّمار تَبدَّت فوقَ أغصانِ

    In his chest is the light of knowledge adorned by deeds

    Like fruits appeared over branches

  14. قد صاغَهُ اللهُ من لُطْفٍ فَلاحَ لنا

    كأنَّهُ مَلَكٌ في جسمِ إنسانِ

    God molded him from gentleness, so he shined upon us

    As if an angel in human body

  15. ضاحي الجبينِ طويلُ الباعِ مُقتدِرٌ

    نالَ الجميلَينِ من حُسْنٍ وإحسانِ

    Bright foreheaded, long handed, capable

    Attained the two beauties, of goodness and benefaction

  16. أخلاقُهُ جَنَّةٌ طابتْ مغَارِسُها

    فيها الفَواكِهُ من نخلٍ ورُمَّانِ

    His morals a paradise, good its plantations

    Therein fruits of palm and pomegranate

  17. كأنَّهُ وَهْوَ في ديوانِ مَنصبِهِ

    أبو حنيفةَ في مِحرابِ ديوانِ

    As if he, while in his office’s diwan

    Abu Hanifa in prayer’s diwan

  18. يُفتي فيُقَضى بفَتواهُ على ثِقةٍ

    في كلِّ قُطرٍ عليهِ آلُ عُثمانِ

    Giving edicts ruled accordingly confidently

    In every place dominated by Uthman’s family

  19. مَن لي بنغْمةِ داودٍ أُشيدُ بها

    في مَدْحِ مَن نالَ حُكماً مِن سُلَيمانِ

    Who can I get David’s rhythm to eulogize

    The one who gained wisdom from Solomon

  20. جارَيتُ أحكامَهُ فيما ادَّعيتُ لهُ

    فلم أُقِمْ حُجةً إلاّ ببُرهانِ

    I tracked his rulings in what I claimed of him

    I did not establish an argument save with proof
