أبكى عُيونَ بني الدَّهَّانِ دَمعَ دمٍ
غُصنٌ يَحِقُّ عليهِ الحُزنُ والكَمَدُ
The eyes of the painters' sons weep blood tears
A branch that grief and despair rightly afflict
قد عاجَلَتهُ بأمرِ اللهِ خاطِفةً
أيدي المَنايا التي في قلبها الحَسدُ
Destiny hastened to take him by God's command
The hands of fate that harbor envy in their hearts
بكَت عليهِ جميعُ النَّاسِ مِن أسفٍ
في ثَغرِ بيروتَ حتَّى ارتجَّتِ البَلَدُ
All the people wept for him in sorrow
In the mouth of Beirut, the city shook
هُناكَ أحرُفُ تاريخٍ لقد رُسِمَتْ
مِن بَعدِ أيوبَ ماتَ الصَّبرُ والجَلَدُ
There the letters of history were inscribed
After Job died, so did patience and steadfastness
