1. تَناقضَ الرَّأيُ بينَ النَّاسِ والعَمَلُ

    والكُلُّ يَرضَى بما فيهِ ويقَتبِلُ

    Opinion is divided amongst people though all are content

    With what they hold and accept

  2. إن كانَ ذلكَ مَقبُولاً بِرُمَّتِهِ

    فليسَ بينَ الوَرى عَيبٌ ولا زَلَلُ

    If this please all outright

    Then no fault lies between mankind nor lapse

  3. النَّاسُ في الأرضِ كالأشجارِ قامَ بها

    حُلوٌ ومُرٌّ ومُعْوجٌّ ومُعتَدِلُ

    People on earth are like trees - some sweet, some bitter

    Some crooked, some upright

  4. وكُلُّ صِنفٍ لهُ وَقتٌ يُرادُ بهِ

    فَلا يَصِحُّ لهُ من غَيرهِ بَدَلُ

    And each type has its season and purpose

    So none can take the role of another

  5. مَن كانَ في النَّاسِ مولوداً على صِفَةٍ

    فليسَ للنَّاسِ في تَغْييرها أمَلُ

    He who is born with a nature

    Cannot have it changed by others' hopes

  6. إذا تَمكَّنَ خُلقُ السُّوءِ في رَجُلٍ

    كما إذا استحَكَمَتْ في جِسِمهِ العِلَلُ

    When bad character takes hold of a man

    As sickness possesses his body

  7. لا يستطيعُ بخيلٌ أنْ يجُودَ ولو

    حَوَى من المالِ ما لا تَحمِلُ الإبِلُ

    No miser can be generous even if

    He hoards wealth beyond what camels can carry

  8. وكُلَّما رُمتَ تَشديدَ الجَبانِ على

    شجاعةٍ زادَ فيهِ الجُبنُ والفَشَلُ

    And the more you seek to make a coward bold

    The more cowardly and failing he becomes

  9. إنَّ الكريمَ الذي لا مالَ في يَدهِ

    مِثلُ الشُّجاعِ الذي في كَفِّهِ شَلَلُ

    A generous man with empty hands

    Is like a brave man with crippled hands

  10. والمالُ مِثلُ الحَصَى ما دَامَ في يَدِنا

    فليسَ يَنفَعُ إلاّ حينَ يَنتقِلُ

    Wealth is like pebbles - useless till spent

    So it benefits only when it moves on

  11. إنَّ الذي قسَمَ الأخلاقَ قد قَسَمَ ال

    أرزاقَ تجري إلى أن يُقسَمَ الأجَلُ

    He who gave out nature gave provision

    That flows till the time allotted is gone

  12. يا رُبَّ قومٍ سَعَوا بالجَهلِ فانتَصَروا

    ورُبَّ قومٍ سَعَوا بالعَقلِ فانخَذلوا

    O Lord of a people who in ignorance prevailed

    And a people in knowledge who failed

  13. وقَلَّ من طابَقَتْ دُنياهُ حِكمَتُهُ

    مِثلَ الأمينِ الذي اعتزَّت بهِ الدُوَلُ

    Few match wisdom and worldly success

    Like the trusted leader whose state prospers

  14. ذاك الذي يَجمعُ السَيفِينِ سَيفَ يدٍ

    وسَيفَ رأيٍ وكُلٌّ به كَلَلُ

    That one of both swords - of hand and thought

    Each ever sharp and ready to assault

  15. بالجِدِّ قَومٌ وقَومٌ بالجُدودِ لهُم

    فخرٌ وهذا على الأمرَينِ يَشتَمِلُ

    Some strive in deed, some in lineage take pride

    Yet both meet in one tribe

  16. من آلِ رَسْلانَ من لَخْمٍ لهُ نسَبٌ

    إلى تَنُوخَ إلى قَحْطانَ يتَّصِلُ

    Of the house of Raslan, whose line extends

    Back to Tanukh and Qahtan without end

  17. سَقَتْ شَقائقَ نُعمانٍ بِمَنْبِتِهِ

    ماءُ السَّماءِ التي يَجري بها المَثَلُ

    The rainclouds watered the highland of Nu'man

    As the legend tells, forming its proverbial fount

  18. قُلْ للخَوَرنَقِ قد أنشا الزَّمانُ لنا

    مَنْ رَبُّهُ اللهُ لا منْ رَبُّهُ الهُبَلُ

    Tell Khawarnaq - times have allowed us one

    Whose Lord is God, not the idols of old

  19. مَنْ يَقرَعُ الذِّكرُ والأورادُ مِسَمعَهُ

    لا ناقةُ العَطَنِ الهَوجاءُ والجَمَلُ

    He whose ears catch the call to prayer and litany

    No she-camel's bray can equal that melody

  20. تِلكَ المُلوكُ أساسٌ قامَ مُنتصِباً

    عليهِ قَصرٌ بَناهُ الخالقُ الأزَلُ

    Those kings - a firm base on which was built

    A palace raised by the Everlasting Guilt

  21. خُلاصةٌ قد تَصَفَّت من عَشائِرِها

    كما تَصفَّى لنا من شَهدِهِ العَسَلُ

    A pure extract of the finest stock

    As honey strained clean of the comb

  22. لَقد وَجدنا بني رَسلانَ طائفةً

    مثلَ الأهلَّةِ بالتَّدريجِ تَكتَمِلُ

    Among Raslan's sons we found a group

    Who grew complete like the crescent moon

  23. أليومَ نالت كمالَ البدرِ فاقتصَرَتْ

    إذ لا كمالَ إلى ما فَوقَهُ يَصِلُ

    Reaching at last the full moon's perfection

    For nothing exceeds what lies beyond its reflection

  24. كُنَّا نُعظِّمُ إسماعيلَ من قِدَمٍ

    فصَغَّرَ الدَّهرُ ما تَستعظِمُ الأُوَلُ

    We thought highly of Ismael in days of old

    Though time makes small what beginnings extol

  25. قد كانَ ذلكَ فوقَ الغَربِ رابيةً

    واليومَ هذا على كُلِّ الرُّبَى جَبَلُ

    Once leagues beyond the West a mere dot

    Now overlooking realms without peer or like

  26. هُوَ الكريمُ الذي تُملى القُلوبُ بهِ

    أُنساً وتُجلَى بمَرأى وَجههِ المُقَلُ

    The noble one whose face lights up hearts

    And brings joy to eyes that behold

  27. لا تَسبِقُ الفعلَ من إنجازِهِ عِدَةٌ

    ويَسبِقُ السَّيفَ من إنصافِهِ العَذَلُ

    No band anticipates victory before the fight

    Nor does the sword precede in dealing what's right

  28. رَحيبُ صَدرٍ تَضيعُ النَّائِباتُ بهِ

    ولا تَضيقُ على آرائهِ السُبُلُ

    Broad of chest - calamities shrink in its span

    And views flow free within its breadth

  29. تَخفَى على مِثلِنا أسرارُ حِكمتِهِ

    كما تَحجَّبَ عن أبصارِنا زُحَلُ

    Wisdom's secrets are obscured from the likes of us

    As Saturn is veiled from our eyes' reach

  30. ألبستُهُ من مديحي خاتَماً نَقَشَتْ

    فيهِ شَهادَتَها الأملاكُ والرُسُلُ

    My praise crowns him like a ring's engraved gem

    Marked by angels and prophets in concord

  31. نَقشٌ إلى الدَّهرِ لا يُمحَى لهُ أثَرٌ

    حتى تَزُول وتُمحَى السَّبعَةُ الطُوَلُ

    A mark till the end of time indelible

    Long as the seven planets endure

  32. قُلْ للأميرِ الذي من نَقدِهِ وَجَلٌ

    يَغشَى القَوافي ومن تَقصيرِها خَجَلُ

    Say to the Prince whose gifts I implore

    That my verses overflow and my rhymes run poor

  33. عارٌ علينا مديحٌ فيكَ مُنتحَلٌ

    وأنتَ في النَّاسِ بِدْعٌ ليسَ تنتَحِلُ

    Shame on me for praise not my invention

    While for you praise itself is not your intention

  34. يا سيفَ دولةِ قَيْسٍ تَقتَضي رَجُلاً

    كابنِ الحُسَينِ وإنِّي ذلكَ الرَجُلُ

    O sword of Qais' fortune - you need a man Like

    al-Husayn's own son, and I'm that man

  35. سَهَّلْتَ لي الشِّعرَ حتَّى لو نَطقَتُ بهِ

    في النَّومِ جاءَ صحيحاً ما بهِ خَلَلُ

    You've allowed me verse with such ease

    Asleep I'd speak poetry no flaw to displease

  36. رَوضٌ تَقلَّبتُ فيهِ من شمائِلِكم

    فكَيفَما مِلْتُ يَملا راحتي النَفَلُ

    A meadow your virtues have led me to turn in

    However I lean comfort fills me within
