1. لَعمْركَ ليسَ فوقَ الأرضِ باقِ

    ولا مِمَّا قَضاهُ اللهُ واقِ

    By your life, nothing on earth remains

    Nor what Allah has decreed stays behind

  2. وما للمَرْءِ حظٌ غيرُ قُوتٍ

    وثَوْبٍ فَوقَهُ عَقْدُ النِّطاقِ

    A man has no portion but sustenance

    And a garment covering the waist tie

  3. وما للمَيْتِ إلاّ قيدُ باعٍ

    ولو كانَتْ لهُ أرضُ العراقِ

    The dead has nothing but a shrouded body

    Even if he owned the land of Iraq

  4. وكم يمضي الفِراقُ بلا لِقاءٍ

    ولكنْ لا لِقاءَ بِلا فِراقِ

    How separation comes without meeting

    Yet no meeting comes without parting

  5. أضَلُّ النَّاسِ في الدُّنيا سَبيلاً

    مُحِبٌّ باتَ منها في وِثاقِ

    The most lost people in life astray

    Are lovers spending nights in anguish

  6. وأخسَرُ ما يَضيعُ العُمرُ فيهِ

    فَضولُ المالِ تُجمَعُ للرِّفاقِ

    The most wasted life is gathering

    Wealth for friends when death is nearing

  7. وأفضلُ ما اشتغَلْتَ بهِ كِتابٌ

    جليلٌ نفعُهُ حُلوُ المَذاقِ

    The best you busy yourself with is a book

    Its profound wisdom sweet to taste

  8. وعِشرةُ حاذقٍ فطِنٍ حكيمٍ

    يُفيدُكَ من مَعانيهِ الدِّقاقِ

    And the company of a wise adept

    Whose meanings sharpen your intellect

  9. هُناكَ المجدُ يَنهَضُ من خُمُولٍ

    بصاحبِهِ إلى أعلى الطِّباقِ

    There glory rises from ignominy

    Lifting its companion to the highest rank

  10. ويُنشي الذِّكرَ بينَ النَّاسِ حَتَّى

    يقومَ بهِ على قَدَمٍ وساقِ

    And spreads renown amongst people until

    He stands tall, steady on feet and legs

  11. مضَى ذِكرُ الملوكِ بكُلِّ عَصرٍ

    وذكر السُّوقةِ العلماءِ باقِ

    Kings' renown in every age has passed

    While scholars' renown remains intact

  12. وكم علمٍ جنى مالاً وجاهاً

    وكم مالٍ جَنَى حربَ السِّباقِ

    How much knowledge produced wealth and status

    And how much wealth brought loss in rivalry

  13. وما نَفعُ الدَّراهمِ مع جَهُولٍ

    يُباعُ بدِرهمٍ وقتَ النَّفَاقِ

    No benefit in coins with an ignorant man

    Sold for a coin when tribulations strike

  14. إذا حُمِلَ النُّضارُ على نياقٍ

    فأيُّ الفخرِ يُحسَبُ للنِّياقِ

    If the delicate is carried on a camel

    Which then is the pride, the camel or the freight?

  15. وأقبَحُ ما يكونُ غِنَى بخيلٍ

    يَغَصُّ وماؤُهُ مِلءُ الزِّقاقِ

    The ugliest is the wealth of a miser

    Whose water fills the street gutters

  16. إذا مَلَكَتْ يداهُ الفَلسَ أمسَى

    رقيقاً ليسَ يطمَعُ في العَتاقِ

    When destitution seized his hands, he became

    Submissive, no more hoping for ransom

  17. ألا يا جامعَ الأموالِ هَلاّ

    جَمَعْتَ لها زَماناً لاِفتِراقِ

    Oh you who hoard riches, why not

    Gather for a time free of separation?

  18. رأيتُكَ تَطلُبُ الأَبحارَ جَهلاً

    وأنتَ تكادُ تغرَقُ في السَّواقي

    I saw you seek the oceans foolishly

    While you nearly drown in gutters

  19. إذا أحرزتَ مالَ الأرضِ طُرّاً

    فما لَكَ فوقَ عَيْشكَ من تَراقِ

    If you quickly gain the world's riches

    What enjoyment remains for you?

  20. أتأكلُ كُلَّ يومٍ ألْفَ كَبْشٍ

    وتَلبَسُ ألفَ طاقٍ فوقَ طاقِ

    Eating a thousand sheep each day

    Wearing a thousand coats upon coats

  21. فَضولُ المال ذاهبةٌ جُزافاً

    كماءٍ صُبَّ في كأسٍ دِهاقِ

    Excess wealth is lost heedlessly

    Like water poured in a broken cup

  22. يَفيضُ سُدىً وقد يسطو عليها

    فينُقِصُ مِلأها عندَ انِدفاقِ

    Spilling fruitlessly, as it may be seized

    Diminishing its fill when bursting out

  23. مَضَت دُوَلُ العُلومِ الزُّهرِ قِدْماً

    وقامتْ دَولةُ الصُّفرِ الرِّقاقِ

    The states of sciences have passed away

    And the state of empty drums has stood

  24. وأبرَزَتِ الخَلاعَةُ مِعصَميْها

    وباتَ الجَهْلُ ممدُودَ الرِّواقِ

    Immorality has shown its forearms

    And ignorance lies sprawled in the hallway

  25. فأصبَحَ يَدَّعي بالسَّبقِ جَهلاً

    زَعانِفُ يَعجزونَ عَنِ اللحاقِ

    So ignorance claims precedence foolishly

    While the incapable struggle to catch up

  26. إذا هَلَكَتْ رِجالُ الحَيِّ أضحَى

    صَبيُّ القومِ يحلِفُ بالطَّلاقِ

    When the men of substance die out

    The people's boy swears by divorce

  27. أسَرُّ النَّاسِ في الدُّنيا جَهولٌ

    يُفَكِّرُ في اصطباحٍ واغتِباقِ

    The most secretive people in life

    Are fools planning their mornings and evenings

  28. وأتعَبُهم رئيسٌ كلَّ يومٍ

    يكونُ لكلِّ ملسوعٍ كراقِ

    And the most tired is a leader each day

    Who must please every grumbling grouch

  29. وأيسرُ كلِّ موتٍ موتُ عبدٍ

    فقيرٍ زاهدٍ حَسَن السِّياقِ

    The easiest death is a poor servant

    Ascetic, of fair conduct

  30. فليسَ لهُ على ما فاتَ حُزنٌ

    وليسَ بخائفٍ ممَّا يُلاقي

    He feels no sorrow for what is past

    Nor fear of what he will encounter
