I see the temptations of this world as the greatest sign,
Through which even the guide goes astray, distracted from the other.
We were heedless of what was in it due to ignorance,
So the owner of the house knows not what is in it more than others.
Death stands waiting in ambush,
Whoever escapes its right hand, it takes him with the left.
We see it without contemplation of what we see,
Like the letter Alif in the name Amr, it crosses but is not read.
He who walks behind the funeral thinks that he
Is safe, not knowing he will meet the same fate.
His eyes see the grave being dug while his heart
Is preoccupied with building a palace.
A covering from this world is upon us as if
It has cast a spell upon the eyes.
Every day we get a sermon from a funeral
But our ears are deaf to its message.
An affliction has befallen Baghdad, laid waste,
Causing Syria to tremble and shaking Egypt.
The messenger of separation came upon him unawares
When he felt secure, assailing him treacherously.
The Eternal chose him, His devoted servant,
Taking him on a blessed night to be in His presence.
For the world there was mourning,
While in the heavens there was celebration of Eid and sacrifice.
A peerless Imam of his time,
His noble qualities adorned the age.
The most astute of creation in thought, the most generous of hand,
The most eloquent in prose and poetry.
He is Al-Umarī, eminent and noble,
Bestowed with this by Al-Fārūq, and he is the most deserving.
His beautiful praise, time will never erase,
I speak truly, but his remembrance will erase time.
If he now lies shrouded in his white garb,
In Paradise he is clad in green silk.
If he tasted no wine on earth,
There he is given a drink with no aftermath of drunkenness.
I used to reap pearls from his words, now
I reap stars in praising him.
I recall of his kindness and affection
Wondrous subtleties I cannot enumerate.
Composing this elegy weighs heavy on my heart,
My tears are about to exhaust the ink.
Soon the page in my hand will ignite,
From the intense sighs of grief rising from me.
May God water a grave that contains his like,
And how many hearts wish it were their grave!
If the grave had power over its affairs,
It would restore him from decay and treasure him.
