أُصِبتُ يَوم الصَعيدِ مِن سُكَر

مُصيبَة لَيسَ لي بِها قِبَلُ

I was stricken on the day of al-Sa'id with intoxication

An affliction that I had no experience of before

تَاللَهِ اِنسى مُصيبَتي أَبَداً

ما اِسمَعتَني حَنينَها الاِبلُ

By Allah, I shall never forget my affliction

You would not hear me wailing over it or the camels

وَلا التَبَكّي عَلَيهِ أَعوِلُه

كُل المُصيبات بَعدَهُ جَلَل

Nor do I complain about it or rely on it

After it, all afflictions are insignificant

لَم يَعلَم النَعشَ ما عَلَيهِ مِن ال

عرف وَلا الحامِلونَ ما حَمَلوا

Neither the bier knew what was upon it

Nor did the bearers know what they carried

حَتّى اجنّوه في ضَريحِهِم

حَتّى اِنتَهى مِن خَليلِهِ الاَجَل

Until they buried him in their tomb

Until his friend's term came to an end
