1. عفا الصفا وانتفى من كوخ ندماني

    وأوشك الشك أن يودي بإيماني

    The meadow forgave and disappeared from my cottage of regret

    And doubt was about to undermine my faith

  2. شربت كأساً ولولا أنهم سكروا

    بخمرتي وسقاني الصاب ندماني

    I drank a cup and if they had not intoxicated

    Me with my wine and made me drink morning regret

  3. لقلت يا ساق هلا والوفاء كما

    ترى تنكر هلا جدت بالثاني

    I would have said: Oh cup where is loyalty as

    You see, does it deny? Did I find it again?

  4. سيمت بلادي ضروب الخسف وانتهك

    ت حظائري واستباح الذئب قطعاني

    My country was struck by all kinds of calamities and its

    Sanctuaries were violated and the wolf looted my herds

  5. وراض قومي على الإذعان رائضهم

    على احتمال الأذى من كل إنسان

    And my people were content with submission, their contentment

    With bearing harm from every human

  6. فاستمر أَوا الضيم واستخذى سراتهم

    فهاكهم يا أخي عبدان عبدان

    So the oppression persisted and their elite were humiliated

    So here they are, my brother, slaves, slaves

  7. وإن تكن منصفاً فأعذر إذا وقعت

    عيناك فينا على مليون سكران

    And if you were fair, excuse me if

    Your eyes fell upon us as millions drunk

  8. إليكها عن أبي وصفي مجلجلة

    أبا فلان وما قولي ببهتان

    To you from Abu Wafi a poem

    Abu so-and-so and my words are not lies

  9. هلا رعيت رعاك اللّه حرمتنا

    هلا جزيت تفانينا بأحسان

    Why did you not, may God guard you, respect us

    Why did you not reward our loyalty with kindness?

  10. مولاي شعبك مكلوم الحشا وبه

    من غض طرفك والاهمال داءان

    My Lord, your people are oppressed and in them

    Is sickness from your aloofness and neglect

  11. وليس ترياقه يا سيدي وأَخي

    في ناب صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ولا في سن ثعبان

    And its antidote, my master and brother

    Is neither in the fang of the one God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, nor in the tooth of a snake

  12. مولاي إن المطايا لا تسير إلى

    غاياتها إن علاها غير فرسان

    My Lord, mounts do not reach

    Their goals if they are not ridden by knights

  13. يا بنت وادي الشتا صرت جنادبه

    ورجعت جلهتاه الغر ألحاني

    O daughter of Wadi Ash-Shta, you have become owls

    And your beauty has returned my love songs

  14. فلا عليك إذا أقريتني لبناً

    وقلت خبزتنا من قمح حوران

    So do not blame me if I make you drink milk

    And say our bread is from the wheat of Hawran

  15. أما السكاكر فلينعم بمأكلها

    صبري ومنكو وتوفيق بن قطان

    As for the rulers, let them enjoy their food

    My patience, resignation, and Tawfiq bin Qattan

  16. وليحي لدجر والكوتا وطغمتها

    في ظل دوح من اللذات فينان

    And Dajar, Al Kuta and their group live

    In the shade of a paradise of pleasures

  17. أما أنا والمناكيد الذين هم

    قومي وصحبي وندماني وخلاني

    As for me and the drunkards who are

    My people, companions, and my regret and sorrows

  18. فحسبنا نعمة الذل التي نخرت

    عظامنا وأعزت

    It is enough for us the grace of humiliation that

    Wasted our bones and honored us

  19. يا صاحبي فدت نفسي نفوسكما

    على المذلة والإذعان روضاني

    My friend, I would sacrifice myself for you

    For humiliation and submission are my meadows

  20. لقد تنكر لي أهلي وأنكرني

    صحبي وأقرب من أدنيت أَقصاني

    My family has denied me and my

    Companions have disowned me and the nearest of my relatives abandoned me

  21. فهاكني كيتامى الزط لا أحد

    يرثي لحالي ولا إنسان يرعاني

    So here I am like a foundling baby, no one

    Mourns my state and no human takes care of me

  22. ولا يراني أهل الخير يوم يدي

    أمدها لهم أهلا لإحسان

    And the good people do not see me the day I

    Extend my hand to them, worthy of kindness

  23. أقول هذا صديق صادق فإذا

    بعد التجارب بي أمنى بخوان

    I say this is a true friend, but when

    After trials, he wishes me bad

  24. فهل علي ودأب الناس ثعلبة

    ورفع كل وضيع القدر والشأن

    Is it upon me the way of people, cunning

    And elevating every low person and matter?

  25. إذا عكفت على كأسي وقلت له

    يا أَيها الكأس أنت الحادب الحاني

    When I dwell on my cup and say

    Oh cup, you are the pouring cup

  26. يا صاحبي أَعيراني عيونكما

    أمتاح من دمعها لكن بأشطان

    My friend, lend me your eyes

    To enjoy tears from them, but with yearning

  27. عسى يخفف كرب الثكل سائلة

    تنساب ما بين جثمان وأكفان

    Maybe it eases the sorrow of bereavement, weeping

    Flowing between corpse and shrouds

  28. قد أَنضبت أدمعي من أَعيني نوب

    تبكي وتضحك قد حلت بأوطاني

    My tears from my eyes have dried, times

    Crying and times laughing, afflicting my homelands

  29. يا صاحبي خذا عني فديتكما

    سر الصبابات والألحان والحان

    My friend, take from me - I sacrifice you -

    The secret of quivery tones and melodies and sorrow

  30. وناشدا الشوق هل شامت مرابعه

    وجداً كوجدي وتحناناً كتحناني

    And ask longing: Did its shelters recover

    And sorrow like my sorrow, and tenderness like my tenderness?

  31. ليلاي قيسك قد شالت نعامته

    إلى فلسطين من غور ابن عدوان

    My nights, your Qais took away his slippers

    To Palestine from the valley of Ibn ‘Awdan

  32. هلا تجملت يا ليلى وقلت له

    مع السلامة إن الدرب سلطاني

    Why did you not wear Kohl, oh Layla, and say to him

    “Farewell, the journey is my sultan.”?

  33. شدوا الرحال إلى ابن السعود ففي

    رحابه مجد غسان وعدنان

  34. ماذا على الناس من سكري وعربدتي

    ماذا على الناس من كفري وإِيماني

    What is it to people my drunkenness and nonsense

    What is it to people my blasphemy and faith?

  35. ماذا على الناس من قولي لهم أحد

    ربي وقولي لهم ربي له ثان

    What is it to people my telling them “the One is

    My God” and telling them “My God has no second”?

  36. ماذا على الناس من لهوي ومن عبثي

    ماذا على الناس من جهلي وعرفاني

    What is it to people my nonsense and my play

    What is it to people my ignorance and knowledge?

  37. ماذا على الناس من صفوي ومن كدري

    ماذا على الناس إِن دهري تحداني

    What is it to people my clarity and my murk?

    What is it to people if my time defies me?

  38. ماذا على الناس من حبي مكحلة

    بين الخرابيش أهواها وتهواني

    What is it to people my love for Mukhalla

    Between prostitutes - I adore her and she flatters me?

  39. قالوا ذوو الشأن في عمان تغضبهم

    صراحتي ولذا أفتوا بحرماني

    The high class in Oman, my candor angers them

    So they issued a fatwa depriving me

  40. قالوا ذوو الشأن في عمان قد برموا

    بمسلكي واصطفاني رهط مجان

    The high class in Oman decided

  41. واستنكروا شر الاستنكار هرولتي

    إلى الخرابيش مع صحبي وندماني

    And they strongly disapproved my running

  42. ما كان أَصدق هذا القول لو عرفت

    عمان مذ خلقت إِنسان ذا شأن

    This saying would not have been more truthful had Oman known

    A man of stature since the first human was created

  43. قالوا تمشكح في يافا لقد صدقوا

    إني تمشكحت رغم لعاذل الشأني

    They said he cavorts in Jaffa, they spoke truly

  44. وقد جررت ولم أحفل بلومهم

    بين الخرابيش عند الزط أرداني

    ما في يدي خلا شجوي وأشجاني

  46. يا أهل يافا لقد واللّه أَرقني

    برق تألق في أجواء حسبان

    Oh people of Jaffa, by God you worried me

    Like lightning flashing in skies of high ambition

  47. فاستيقظت عبرتي من بعد هجعتها

    وعادني ذكرهم من بعد نسيان

    So my weeping which had been asleep awoke

    And the memory of them returned after forgetfulness

  48. ليلاي دنياي أحلام مجنحة

    تطير بي في فضاء أَحمر قان

    My nights, my world, winged dreams

    Flying me into red space

  49. يا ليتها حلقت ليلى بأجنحتها

    إذن لقلت لها طوباك جنحاني

    Oh, if only they had flown with their wings, oh Layla

    I would have then said: Blessed are your wings that carry me!

  50. إذن لزغردت يا ليلى وقلت لها

    مع السلامة إن الدرب سلطاني

    I would have then chirped, oh Layla, and said to her

    “Farewell, the journey is my sultan.”

  51. قالوا يحب أَجل إِنى أَحب متى

    كان الهوى سبة يا أهل عمان

    They said: He loves - Yes, I love whenever

    Love becomes a disgrace, oh people of Oman

  52. أما هواك فلا زلت الحفي به

    ولا أزال عليه الحادب الحاني

    As for your love, I still conceal it

    And remain the pouring, singing cup

  53. أما لياليك يا ليلى فقد سحبت

    سود الليالي عليها ذيل نيسان

    As for your nights, oh Layla, they have dragged

    The dark nights over them with the train of April

  54. فادني شفاهك من فيهي أمصمصها

    وادفئيني فإن البرد آذاني

    So bring your lips near my mouth, let me suck them

    And warm me, for the cold hurts my ears

  55. أما الشباب فقد أودت بجدته

    ليلاي ليلاي إرهاقات سجاني

    As for youth, it has done away with my strength

    My nights, my nights, exhaustions of my prison days

  56. ليلاي إن الخلابيس العتاة عتوا

    على فراشي واستصلوا بنيراني

    My nights, the harsh goblins have oppressed

    My bed and burned me with fires

  57. فربتي بأبي أنت على كتفي

    إني على نفسه إني أنا الجاني

    So God guide my father, you are on my shoulder

    It is me, myself who is the guilty one

  58. ما زال وادي الشتا دفلاه مزدهر

    مالي ومالكم يا جيرة البان

    The valley of Ash-Shta its plants still flourishing

    What is it to me and you, oh neighbors of the highlands?

  59. مالي وزمزم ماء غير سائغة

    فأسقني جرعة من ماء حسبان

    What is it to me and Zamzam, its water undrinkable

    So quench my thirst with a sip from waters of reckoning

  60. لولا الهوى لم أرق دمعاً على طلل

    ولا حننت إلى أطلال عمان

    Were it not for passion, I would not have shed a tear over ruins

    And would not have yearned for the ruins of Oman

  61. يا حادي الركب قف واصمت على مضض

    فالركب تحدوه سعلاة تحداني

    Oh guide of the caravan, stop and hush for sadness

    The caravan you guide, highway robbers challenge me

  62. قفا بعمواس بي يا ابني وانتظرا

    لو ساعة فهوى وصفي تحداني

    Stop, Oh Ibn ‘Amwas, wait for me

    For an hour as the passion of Wafi challenges me

  63. وسائلا كل ركب مر عن ولدي

    وسائلا الركب عن دحنون أوطاني

    Ask every caravan that passed about my son

    And ask the caravans about my Dahnun homelands

  64. ويسألونك عني إنني رجل

    طرد الهوى مذ براني اللّه ديداني

    And they will ask you about me, that I am a man

    Passion expelled since God afflicted me with osteoporosis

  65. أين الندامى مضوا كل لطيته

    وخلفوني بهذا الكوخ وحداني

    Where are the penitents? They all went their own ways

    And left me alone in this cottage lonely

  66. فلا كؤوس ولا ساق ولا وتر

    يشنف اليوم وا ويلاه آذاني

    So no more cups, nor server, nor strings

    To entertain today, woe to my ears!

  67. قالوا تعاقرها قولوا لهم علناً

    إني أعاقرها في كل دكان

    They said he drinks it pure, tell them publicly

    That I drink it pure in every shop

  68. قال الأطباء لا تشرب فقلت لهم

    الشرب لا الطب عافاني وأبراني

    The doctors said “Do not drink,” so I said to them

    Drinking not medicine cured and redeemed me

  69. علي بالكأس فالدنيا مهازلها

    طغت على الناس لكن شر طغيان

    Pour me the cup, for the ordeals of life

    Have overcome people, but tyranny is worse

  70. قالوا تدمشق قولوا ما يزال على

    علاته إربدي اللون حوراني

    They said you are from Damascus - Say he still

    In his prime, make my color paler, Huran made me

  71. إليك عني ألقاباً وأوسمة

    قد أرهقت بضروب الخزي عنواني

    To you are epithets and medals

    That have burdened my pride with forms of disgrace

  72. رأسي لربي وربي لن أطاطئه

    ولن أذلك يا نفسي لديان

    My head is for my Lord and my Lord will not

    Humiliate myself to atone, oh my soul, to the Compensator

  73. شمس العدالة لم تشرق على نفر

    مؤلف من مخاريق وخرسان

    The sun of justice did not rise upon a group

    Composed of riffraff and rabble

  74. فليتق اللّه بي شعب محبته

    كانت وما برحت ديني وديدا

    So let my people fear God whom I loved

    And remained and did not cease to be my religion and creed

  75. وليتق اللّه بي شعب وفيت له

    حق الوفاء وبالنكران كافاني

    And let my people who were loyal to me fear God

    The day friends called: O Qahtan!

  76. على مذابح قولي سوف أسعده

    ضحيت عمري فلم يسعد وأشقاني

    And hung them upon posts. They did not know

    That resolves do not waver with spears

  77. الناس أحلاس من دامت سعادته

    وكلهم خصم من يمنى بخسران

    They said about your poetry - lovers wishing

    To collect some of it in a book

  78. يا أربعاً ما وراء الحصن عامرة

    بما تعانيه من ظلم وطغيان

    So I said: My poetry is scattered limbs

    As if it is my life dispersed in every arena

  79. قضى أساطين حزبي يا أخي ومضوا

    فاشحذ مداك فإني اليوم وحداني

    And the day of resurrection comes and what

    Death rules in publicizing and announcing

  80. نحن الأَولى قد وفينا في مودتنا

    يوم الرفاق تنادوا يالقحطان

    Even the deaf will hear the pearls I compose

    Uttered by mute mouths

  81. وعلقوهم على الأعواد ما علموا

    أَن العزائم لا تثنى بعيدان

    Oh women of Jordan, if I die abroad

    Bury me, by my father you are my shrouds

  82. قالوا لشعرك عشاق بودهم

    أن يجمعوا بعضه في شبه ديوان

    And tell the companions: visit some of my remains

    In Tel Arbid or on the slopes of Mount Shihan

  83. فقلت شعري أشلاء مبعثرة

    كأنها عمري في كل ميدان

    They said: he died and went on his way, Wahbi went on his merry way

  84. ويوم يأزف ميعاد النشور وما

    يقضي به الموت من جهر وإعلان

    آيات تلفظها أفواه خرسان

  86. يا أردنيات إن أَوديت مغترباً

    فانسجنها بأبي أنتن أكفاني

  87. وقلن للصحب واروا بعض أعظمه

    في تل إربد أو في سفح شيحان

  88. قالوا قضى ومضى وهبي لطيته

    تغمدت روحه رحمات رحمان

  89. عسى ولعل به يوماً مكحلة

    تمر تتلو عليه حزب قرآن
