What is mine and Breffni's, O lovers of Breffni!
Remoteness has become a substitute for our intimacy,
And instead of gray hair, the dreams of youth have become virtuous,
And our aloofness has taken the place of our affectionate meeting.
Verily, as I have said, I lamented my youth,
And I have retired, neither for worldly life nor for religion.
So neither the valleys of travel remind me of her,
Nor the gazelles in the meadows of Ajloun.
The state of youth which I wasted
In what was possible for me of intimacy with them.
When I realized the devotion I was attempting
And joined them, washing them today became impossible.
I used to think I would remain a companion of joy,
Even if I exceeded ninety years old my son.
Not everything one wishes is attained,
So be gentle with my heart for it has become miserable.
Take from me, a charity you pay on behalf of
The maidens of purity, Breffni.
And recite in the hearing of her our words:
"We greet you, O Breffni, with life."
On the passion which I was accustomed to,
In the days when our club was visited daily.
So longing touches my heart in its sides,
And ardour makes my soul familiar in its corners.
And companionship is excused that we seek their help,
When the matter most needs our weeping and theirs.
We have mastered love until it does not concern us,
And we have transcended beauty until it does not draw near us.
