If love caresses him
What will the heart do?
Is it wrong if, though aged,
It yearns and flutters for the gazelles
That passed by the herd?
O my pounding heart, habit
Has been to dismiss passion
And my years are over fifty
Yet have not made me wiser
Shall I turn away if a kohl-eyed one
Throws me a glance on the path?
Pass it round, o cupbearer
Pass the circulating cup
And say to those blaming me for chasing passion
"Bow down to it!"
And leave Oman drunk
On brazen hypocrisy and lies
I have jested a little, so I apologize
As I reckon it is enough, Aleppo
Do you not know that it, like you,
My brother, has a Lord?
So do not blame or praise
Neither fodder nor water nor grass
Evil is the right that does not protect
Those under the wing of the stern and angry
In a fake market since
The beggars crawled
With your thickets, O olive tree, the wolf
Has become emboldened
And since I saw beggars
Complaining to the path
I have decided, O regret,
Not to walk but to crawl
