لما وجدت مكارم الأخلاق

في الدنيا كلام

When I found morals of nobility

In the world just vain words

ورأيت أن المين والتد

ليس أوفى بالمرام

And saw that oaths and covenants

Were not the most faithful in purpose

حررت نفسي من قيود

الفضل في عرف الكرام

I freed myself from the shackles

Of superiority in custom of honor

وزججتها في زمرة المتصع

لكين مع الطغام

And caged it among the insolent

In order to be with the tyrants

وأهبت بالساقي أَن أسرع

بالسلافة يا غلام

And I called upon the cupbearer to hurry

With the drink, O lad!

وأدر على الندمان حتى

يثملوا كأس المدام

And pass it around to the regretful ones

Until they become drunk with wine

فالناس عندهم الفضي

لة كالرذيلة بالتمام

For people see nobleness

Just like villainy in its entirety

إن القداسة لو تقي يا

شيخ من وقع السهام

If piety, O Sheikh, could protect

From being struck by arrows

ما استهدف البيت الحرام

لما ترى وخلاك ذام

The Sacred House would not have been targeted

When you see this and it grieves you

ولما أتاك حديث شعب

في شعاب منى مضام

And if the talk of a foolish nation

In the valleys of Mina reached you

فاقصر حديث الفقه

يا عبود لا تزد الملام

Then make talk of jurisprudence short

O slave, do not increase blame

والحق أضيع من يتيم

أم مأدبة اللئام

Truth is more lost than an orphan

At the dinner table of the vile

فاصفع نهارك بالصيام

وجنح ليلك بالقيام

So start your day with fasting

And end your night with prayers

واذهب ودعني أستضيء

بنور راقصة الظلام

And go and leave me to illuminate myself

With the light of the dancing darkness

هذي خيام الهبر فاحبب

بالمخيم والخيام

These are the tents of Hibar so love

The campsite and tents

سمراء والعينان زرقاوان

في قد الغلام

Dark-skinned with two blue eyes

At the stature of a lad

ما شام طلعتها أَخو

شغف بها إلا وهام

No glance of hers rises except

With passion and infatuation

غنت فذكرني تجاوب

صوتها رجع الحمام

She sang and her voice responding

Reminded me of doves cooing

وتمايلت فأمال عقلي

في تثنيه القوام

And she swayed and diverted my mind

With the bend of her posture

يا بنت يا من أمرها

لما تعاوجت استقام

O daughter, she whose walk

Straightened out when she swayed

لولا الرغيف وفقر أهلك

واحتياجك للطعام

If not for bread and your family's poverty

And your need for food

هل كنت ترضين الحياة

كذا وفي هذا المقام

Would you have accepted life

Thus and in this position?

يا لقمة الخبز التي

إشقت بحاجتها الأَنام

O morsel of bread which

Tormented people with its need

وأذل مطلبها العزيز

وفت في عضد الهمام

And humbled the dignified with its request

And loosened the resolve of the steadfast!

تف على بشرية

أَلقت لمثلك بالزمام

Spit on a humanity

That handed over the likes of you in servitude

هانت فلم تحفظ لغير

صغائر الدنيا ذمام

You were disgraced but did not preserve

For others the insignificant things of life

آأنت موضوع الحياة

وتستحق الاحترام

You are the subject of life

And deserve respect
