أقبل الساقي فقولوا حيهلا

وأَديروا بينكم كأس الطلا

The cupbearer approaches, greet him,

Pass the cup of wine amongst yourselves,

ما على الشيخ ولست ابن جلا

أنا إِن ساومت قعوار على

It is not for the old man, though I'm no youth,

To haggle over my aunt's price;

عمتي وابتعت بالعمة خمرة

نحن لا نسقي ولكن نشرب

I bought the wine with her price.

We do not serve the wine but drink it,

وإِذا الناس مضوا لا نذهب

نحن لا نشكو ولكن نعتب

When people leave we do not go,

We do not complain but gently chide,

نحن لا نلهو ولكن نلعب

تارة في زي وطوراً بالمجرة

We do not jest but play,

Sometimes disguised and sometimes obvious.

أزف الموعد والأهواء شتى

وأنا يا صاح أرعاهم وأنت

The tryst is announced but passions vary,

As for me, friend, I indulge them all,

إنهم صم وعميان وموتى

وبهذا شيخنا حمزة أفتى

They are deaf, blind and dead,

Our Shaykh Hamza has so decreed,

فدع الإجحاف يستأنف سكره

سكر الدهر فدعنا نسكر

So let the sober feel their lack anew.

Let us feel the drunkenness of Time,

ودع الناس يروا ما لم يروا

وليقل شيخاك هذا منكر

And leave people to behold the unseen,

And call your shaykhs forbidden;

فشر الكهان أو لم يفشروا

سأبيع الدين والدنيا بسكرة

Are seers not the worst seers?

I will sell religion and world for a sip,

الهوى يضحك والجد يئن

يعزف العازف والعزاف جن

Passion laughs and duty sighs,

The musician plays and the tool dances,

نحن لا نعرف من فينا يحن

ذهب الظن وبعض الإثم ظن

We know not who in us grieves,

Suspicion is gone, some vice is suspicion,

سر هذا الكون قد أدركت سره

I have grasped the secret of the universe.
