يا زِينَةَ الدّهْرِ وعَيْنَ الوُجُودْ

وَصْلُكَ قَدْ بَدّلْتَهُ بالصُّدودْ

O beauty of the age and delight of existence

Your companionship you have changed into estrangement

ما بَالُ ذاكَ الحالِ قَدْ حالَ مِنْ

مَنْ يَحْفَظُ الوُدَّ ويَرْعَى العُهُودْ

What is the matter with this state that has departed from

One who preserves love and observes pacts

وإنْ أَقُلْ ذَا القَطْعُ والصَّرْمُ مِنْ

عَادَاتِ ذا الصّارِمِ قامَتْ رُدودْ

And if I say, this aloofness and harshness are from

The attributes of one severe, arguments have been set forth

فإِنّهُ بَيْنَ الوَرَى مُفْرَدٌ

في حُسْنِ عَهْدٍ وَوَفاءٍ وُجُودْ

For he among mankind is peerless

In goodness of covenant and bounteous generosity

قَدْ جاءَ أَنَّ العَيْنَ حَقٌّ فَما

أَصابَ وُدِّي غَيْرُ عَيْنِ الحسُودْ

Word has come that the eye is truth, so what

Has befallen my beloved except an envier's eye
