Give back my heart—the young man cannot live
without a heart, O sons of Mālik!
No—and may God seize my beloved!—for
a bondsman can win no redress from a master.
Longing for Najd has killed me, while
its dweller is unaware of the man who is perishing.
I left it, seeking the encampments of al-Liwā,
and this path led the wayfarer astray.
I ended up neither this nor that, nor
did I attain what I sought from all that.
