I love what he loves; and if something arises
that causes harm, he finds me warding off the harm.
Nor do I turn away from loving one
for whom I have grown insatiable in my love.
I journey if he journeys, until
my lean mount has grown swift from my beating it.
I weep over parting from him if he goes far away;
thus you see my eye has grown bleary.
If the reproacher blames me for loving him,
I deem him foolish in his reproach.
Have I brought the proof, O ʿIzz al-Hudā,
or am I not convincing in what I have said?
