يا بنَ الأُولَى في شانِهِمْ
بهَلْ أَتَى الْمَدْحُ أَتى
O son of those for whom
in “Has There Come,” praise came;
ومَنْ هُمُ القادَةُ إنْ
أَعْضَلَ أَمْرٌ أو عَتا
who are the leaders whenever
a matter grows intractable or defiant.
مُحَلَّقٌ منْ فِضَّةٍ
بَعَثْتَ يا خَيْرَ فَتى
Ringed round with silver—
you sent it, O finest youth—
كَأَنّهُ الجامَاتُ فِي
فَيْرُوزَجٍ قَدْ نُعِتَا
as though it were goblets amid
turquoise, as described;
أو الثُّرَيّا أو عُقُو
دُ الدُّرِّ إن ما نَبتَا
or the Pleiades, or strings
of pearls—were those two to blossom.
نَظْمُكَ والْمَنْثورُ قَدْ
وَافَى مَتَى الفَضْلُ مَتَى
Your verse, and your prose too, have
arrived—when has excellence ever so arrived?
