1. يا نَفْسِيَ الأَمّارَهْ

    بِكُلِّ ذِي نَكارَهْ

    O my blaming soul

    With every reprehensible trait

  2. مَتَى تكُونِي صالِحَهْ

    وبالأُجورِ رَابِحَهْ

    When will you become righteous

    And with rewards, profitable

  3. ألَسْتِ نَفْسَ عالِمِ

    مُعَلِّمِ العَوَالِمِ

    Are you not the soul of a scholar

    Teacher of all worlds

  4. قالَتْ أَنَا الّلوَّامَهْ

    أَلُومُ ذَا العَلاّمَهْ

    It said, I am blameworthy

    I blame the one with the flag

  5. ولَيْسَ يُجْدِي لَوْمِي

    في يَقْظَتِي ونوْمِي

    And my blaming is of no use

    In my wakefulness and sleep

  6. فَقُلْتُ إنّ لَوْمَكِ

    يَعُودُ مِنْكِ نَحْوَكِ

    So I said, your blaming

    Returns from you toward you

  7. وإنّكِ الْمُرادَهْ

    بالقَصْدِ والإرَادَهْ

    And you are the one intended

    With purpose and will

  8. أَما سَمِعْتِ قَوْلَهُمْ

    في عَتْبِهِمْ نَفْسَكَ لُمْ

    Have you not heard their saying

    In blaming yourself, hold your tongue
