فَارَقْتُ حِلْمِيَ إنْ لَمْ أَرْضَ ظامِئَةً
إلى النَّجِيعِ بِشُرْبِ الْعَلِّ والنَّهَلِ
May I lose my good sense if I fail to slake a thirst
For gore, with first and second draughts.
لا عِشْتُ إن عِشْتُ ضَرَّاعا ومُمْتَهَناً
ولالعاً لِعثُوري عَثْرَة الْوَكِلِ
May I not live if I live groveling and debased,
And may I never recover from stumbling as a weakling stumbles.
فَلَيْسَ يَبْيَضُّ عَيْشٌ قَطُّ في زَمَنٍ
إلاّ إذا احْمَرَّ فِعْلُ الباسِلِ الْبَطَلِ
For life never grows white in any age,
Except when the valiant hero’s deed turns red.
