أرى المُعدمَ المسكينَ في الناسِ هالكا

وما حيلةُ العرجاءِ بينَ المزاحمِ

I see the destitute poor man perishing among people,

And the lame has no chance against the jostling crowds,

كأن لم تكنْ حواءُ في الناسِ أمهُ

ولم يكن بينَ الناطقينَ ابنُ آدمِ

As if Eve had never been the mother of mankind,

And Adam's son had never been among speaking men.

فقولوا لعبادِ الدنانيرَ ويحهمْ

ألا ذكروا يوماً عبيدَ الدراهمِ

Say to the slaves of money: Shame!

Do they never remember the slaves of mere coins?
