الأصدقاءُ قليلُ

والحرُّ فيهم أقلُّ

Friends are few

The free among them are fewer

والناسُ كهْلٌ غنيٌّ

وذو شبابٍ مقلُّ

People are either old and rich

Or young and poor

فلا ترى الشيخَ يقوى

ولا الفتى يستقلُّ

You see neither the old with strength

Nor the young with independence
