ما لأيامِ ذا الصبا تتفانى

وقديماً عهدتها تتوانى

The days of youth are slipping by,

Once lingering, now rushing to fly,

ذهبت بالصبا سلامٌ عليها

من فؤادٍ بحبها ملآنا

Youth departed with peace be upon it,

From a heart filled with love for it.

كل ذي حالة سيمنى بأخرى

ويلاقي بعد الزمانِ زمانا

Each state is followed by another,

And time meets with time later.

والفتى من إذا تغيرَ حالٌ

لم يقف في وجوهِهِ حيرانا

If a youth’s state changes,

Bewildered he halts not at all.

هذهِ ساعة الحصادِ فمن كا

نَ تعنى أراحهُ ما عانى

This is the harvest time so whoever

Toiled is now at ease and better.

والذي يزرعُ التهاونَ في الأش

ياءِ لا يجتنيهِ إلا هوانا

Who laziness in affairs did sow,

None but disgrace he shall mow.

ليس يجدي الإنسانَ أن يأملَ النا

سَ فلاناً من قومهِ وفلانا

A man hopes not from people for

This or that one safe harbor.

فاسعَ في الأرضِ إن عقبانَ هذا

الجوِ لا يرتضينَ منه مكانا

So roam the land for skies of this epoch,

Do not wish from them any location.

واحذر الناسَ إنما يأمنُ النا

سَ صبيٌ يظنهم صبيانا

And beware of people for safety

Only a child expects from them purity.

واركبِ الجدَ في الأمورِ ولا تجبنْ

إذا فاتَ بعضها أحيانا

And ride on seriousness in matters, do not weaken,

If you miss some of them occasionally.

إن هذا الوجودَ كالحربِ لا يُكْرَ

مُ في الحربِ من يكون جبانا

For existence is like war, cowardice

Is not excused in war frequently.
