Or do descendants of her own stock plot against her?
Nor is there any flaw except what kinship itself has wrought.
She was for them the source of every noble distinction,
while they became the cause of the affliction time dealt her.
No fault attaches to the pure Arabs when they speak
among non-Arabs—except that they are Arabs.
Birds sing in differing voices, like humankind, yet
to the crow the nightingale’s rapture wins no praise.
Long ages passed over her while she remained radiant,
like the face of the sun, with no suspicion clinging to her.
Then darkness spread across all her horizons,
like the full moon whose light the clouds have veiled.
Then she gleamed, and they said, “Dawn is followed by
morning.” Morning came—yet hers was a false dawn.
Then she vanished, while the sun above us bore witness,
as though it were an ember blazing in the sky.
Ask the stars how many generations have succeeded one another beneath them,
while these meteors have never ceased to shine.
And ask humankind how many ancient languages on earth
the passing ages have renewed in splendor.
We stand amazed while time makes sport of us;
we took no heed—and miserable indeed is the habit of amazement.
Affairs belong to whoever spends the night pursuing them;
how can they endure when those who seek them are gone?
Time once was ours, and tongues united us;
now we belong to time, and fortune has reversed.
Those before us hoped that we would be their successors;
today, could they look upon us after them, they would mourn.
Shall we let the West distract us with its glitter,
while the sun-rising East makes us weep and itself sobs?
We have a river, sweet to whoever drinks from it;
how can we leave it to slip away into the sea?
Whichever language makes a person forget his own tongue
is a calamity pouring from his own mouth.
How long speech has endured beneath the shade of palaces, since
the days of desert tents and tent ropes—
when the sun scorched it and the wind buffeted it,
and it lacked shade and water and grass!
I see the souls of humankind in all their differences; their worth
lies, for me, in their capacity to be moved—not in might or rank.
Have you not seen firewood rise and become flame
when the wood was stirred by the touch of the blaze?
Shall we squander what time has preserved for us
and shake out empty hands—with neither glory nor lineage?
We would then be a glaring disgrace in the East;
the East is of us, though within it we stand in ruins.
Far be it that all this shouting should help us:
what good can a coward do when calamity strikes him with fear?
Whoever is powerless to ward off a calamity—
his utmost is to meet it, seeking divine recompense.
Whenever languages flourish, their books surely
secure for the Arabs every kind of glory among them.
Among metals are those whose luster the hand of rust strips away;
gold alone does not rust.
