1. You shunned me, though the fault is yours;

    you wronged me—God alone is enough to deal with you.

  2. What ails your heart, that it will not soften?

    Is your heart hewn from the very core of rock?

  3. You withheld even letters from me,

    for fear your writing might heal me.

  4. You begrudged me even a word of reproach,

    though perhaps your rebuke alone might suffice me.

  5. You even forbade your phantom to

    draw near—though its nearness would be yours.

  6. Come back to me, or forsake me; truly I

    love you alike in union and estrangement.

  7. You surely see that faithfulness

    is my constant way—why make rebuffing yours?

  8. All humankind has turned reproacher:

    my friends rebuke me, and yours do too.

  9. Then glory in yourself and strut—what care is it to you

    when your pride has humbled everyone?

  10. Whether you withdraw or draw near,

    in either state, I am your ardent lover.
