1. يا مَن لهذا المريض المدنَف العاني

    مُرِدَّدِ النفس من آن إلى آنِ

    O you, for whom this ailing, wretched, suffering one

    Whose breaths come and go, sigh after sigh

  2. إذا رأى الليلَ ظنَّ القبرَ شُقَّ لهُ

    وظنّ انجمَهُ آثار أكفانِ

    When he sees the night, he thinks his grave has opened for him

    And imagines its stars to be the traces of his shroud

  3. ويحسبُ الصبح بابَ الموت لاح لهُ

    وفوقهُ الشمسُ قُفلٌ فتحُهُ داني

    He reckons the dawn to be death's gate opened for him

    With the sun above it like a lock, opened by time

  4. نضوٌ على رَمقٍ فان يعيشُ بهِ

    لكنهُ رمقٌ مهما يعيش فاني

    Alive on his last breaths, if he lives by them

    Yet they are breaths, however much he lives, still vanishing

  5. مُطَرَّح الهمّ في كل الجهات فما

    يرى بكل مكان غيرَ أَحزانِ

    Lying down in sorrow in every direction, so he

    Sees in every place nothing but sorrows

  6. تَؤُزُّهُ كبِدٌ حرَّىن مُعَلَّقَةٌ

    من الاضالع في اعوادِ نيرانِ

    His burning liver hangs from the ribs

    In beams of fire's wood

  7. يا من لهُ إِذ يرى الدنيا كما اشتَبَهَت

    بقيةُ الحلم في اجفان يقظانِ

    O you, for whom when he sees the world as

    The remainder of a dream in waking eyelids

  8. يا من لهُ اذ يرى الاشياءَ واهنةً

    كما بدا اثر الذكرى بنسيانِ

    O you, for whom when he sees things as weak

    As the trace of memories in forgetfulness

  9. حَيٌّ طريحٌ يراهم يُلحِدونَ لهُ

    لم يستحقوا أَن تراهم منهُ عينانِ

    Alive but laid down, he sees them digging his grave

    They did not deserve that his eyes see them

  10. يا من لذا الشرق يا من للطريح على

    لحد الزمان بأيدي شرِّ اعوانِ

    O you, for this east, O you, for the one laid down

    At the edge of time by the evil hands of rascals

  11. مُستيئسين ولمَّا يأملوا أَملاً

    واليأسُ داءٌ لنفس العاجز الواني

    Despairing, never hoping for hope

    Despair is the malady of a helpless, weak soul

  12. ويسبقون الردى للقبر وهو قضاً

    في الغَيب فاعجب لهذا الشان من شان

    And they hasten ruin to the grave, which is decreed

    In the unseen, so strange is this state of affairs

  13. ويُذعنون ولا ما يُذعنون لهُ

    لكنَّهُ خلُقٌ يقضي بإِذعانِ

    They surrender, but not to whom they surrender

    Yet it is the created nature to surrender

  14. ويسأَلون المُنَى تجري بلا عمل

    كالريح جارية في غير ارسانِ

    And they ask for death to flow without action

    Like the wind flowing freely, not channeled

  15. سُخفٌ وأَسخفُ منهُ وهو مَعجَزةٌ

    وَضلَّهُ أَن يُسمَّوهُ بايمان

    Foolish, more foolish than it, and it is a miracle

    Its misguidance to name it faith

  16. يا ويح للشرق من أَمر بهِ لَبكٍ

    كالهِمّ ملتبس في رأي حيرانِ

    Oh woe to the east from the confusing command it is in

    Like anxiety intertwined in the mind of the confused

  17. من كل مُضلِعة ترمى بمُعضلِة

    رميَ النحوس لذي بؤس بحرمانِ

    From every side problems are cast

    The cast of the unlucky upon the deprived

  18. تعقَّدت والتوَت كالمستحيل فما

    تُريك من موضع فيها لإِمكانِ

    They have complicated and twisted like the impossible so

    You do not see in them any room for possibility

  19. لو صوَّرها لكانت صورة امرأة

    مصبوغة من جهالات بأَلوان

    If pictured, it would be the image of a woman

    Colored by ignorances in colors

  20. ربُّوا لذا الشرق يا قومي ممرِّضةً

    تحنو عليهِ بإِحساس ووجدان

    Raise up for this east, my people, a nurse

    Who is tender to him with feeling and emotion

  21. تطبهُ روحُها مما أَلمَّ بهِ

    فان أَقتلَ داءِ الشرق روحاني

    Her soul curing what pained him

    For the soul of the east is the killer of its disease

  22. يرى عواطفَها الأَديانَ خالصةً

    اذا تلعَّب أَهلوهُ بأَديان

    He sees her pure religions as passions

    When the ignorant play with religions

  23. يرى بها عهدَهُ عهدَ الملائك في ال

    بِر الطبيعيّ في حسنٍ واحسانِ

    Through her he sees his covenant the covenant of angels in

    Natural kindness and beneficence

  24. يرى حناناً كعهد الانبياء وما

    تشتاقهُ الروحُ فيهِ منذُ أزمانِ

    He sees tenderness as in the era of prophets and what

    The soul has longed for over ages

  25. يرى الفضائل بعد اليأس قد ظفرت

    آمالهنَّ ونالت قلب إِنسانِ

    He sees virtues have succeeded after despair

    Their hopes won the heart of man

  26. رَبُّوا له الأَّمَّ يا قومي فلو وُجدت

    في الشرق ما طاح في ذلّ واهوانِ

    Raise for him the mother, my people, for if she existed

    In the east, it would not have fallen into so much disgrace

  27. تلك التي ترفع الدنيا وتخفضهُا

    بطفلها فهوَ والدنيا بميزانِ

    She who lifts up the world and brings it down

    With her child, so he and the world are in balance

  28. تلك السماءُ التي تُلقي لهم مَلكاً

    فلا يربُّونهُ الاَّ كشيطانِ

    That heaven which casts down for them an angel

    And they raise him only like a devil

  29. تلك التي جعلوها في المنازل كال

    مرآة مطروحةً في دار عميانِ

    She whom they have made in homes to be

    A mirror discarded in the house of the blind

  30. ذنبُ الرجال ولكنَّ النساء بهِ

    مُعاقباتٌ بآلام واشجانِ

    The sin of men, but the women are

    Punished for it with sorrows and passions

  31. كمقلة العين في آلامها اعتَجَلت

    والداءُ ما مسّ منها غير اجفانِ

    Like the pupil of the eye in its pains made hasty

    While the illness touched none but the eyelids

  32. لهفي لجوهرة زهراءَ ما سطعت

    في جيد غانية او فوق تيجانِ

    Yearning for a radiant pearl never beaming

    Upon the neck of a singing girl or on a crown

  33. لهفي لريحانة خضراءَ ما قُطعت

    الاَّ لتذبلَ في واحات نشوانِ

    Yearning for a verdant sprig never cut

    Except to wither in the meadows of Nishapur

  34. لهفي لغانية عذراءَ ما وُضعت

    الاَّ بمنزل اسواءٍ واضغانِ

    Yearning for an unsullied singing girl never placed

    Except in the dwellings of sorrows and sighs

  35. لكل معنى جميل ما يلائمهُ

    كما تمازجُ الحانٌ بالحانِ

    For every beautiful meaning suits it

    As melodies blend with melodies

  36. وليس يُطرب صوتُ الماء منحدراً

    كما ترى وقعهُ في سمع ظمآن

    And the voice of cascading water does not delight

    As you see its impact on the hearing of the thirsty

  37. فيا إِلهي اذا اجريتَ في قدَر

    يوماً بان يلتقي في الناس ضدَّان

    So my God if you ordained in fate

    A day when opposites meet amongst people

  38. فاجعل للطفك معنى في التقائهما

    كيلا يكون من الضدين زوجان

    Make your kindness have meaning in their meeting

    So the opposites do not become a pair

  39. فما خلقتَ كمثل البغض في امرأَةٍ

    ينالها رجلٌ يوماً بطغيان

    You did not create hatred in a woman

    Attained by a tyrannical man

  40. ولا خلقت كمثل الذل في رجلٍ

    تسومهُ امرأَة سوءاً بعُدوان

    Nor created humiliation in a man

    Evilly treated by an aggressive woman

  41. يابانياً بقلوب الناس يجعلها

    قصر الحياة تبصَّر أيُّها الباني

    Builder of people's hearts, making them

    The palace of life, seeing, O builder

  42. أسس على الحب لا تُلق القلوب سُدًى

    وَضع لكل فؤَاد شكلهُ الثاني

    Lay the foundation on love, do not vainly cast hearts

    For each heart, make its second image

  43. فلست تبني سوى دارٍ اذا خَرِبَت

    اركانها خربت من كل عمران

    You build only a house which if ruined

    In its pillars, ruins all civilization

  44. دار السعادة دارُ الحب دارُ مُنى ال

    أَحباب دارُ الغرام الخالد الهاني

    The home of happiness, home of love, home of wishes

    Of loved ones, eternal, lovely home of passion
