They likened you, O morning sun,

To the full moon unjustly and the crescent

And their eyes found you radiant

So they compared you to a gazelle and gazelle fawn

Your beauty refuses to be measured when you are the measure of beauty

I pardoned a heart that saw you and flew away

Like a bird when the daylight appears

And blood surges at the mention of your memory

    As the sparks were stirred

You sprinkled the night with a ray from it

As the sun sprinkles it with dew

My ribs collapsed, and at the fire's site

The people of the house demolish their homes

And when they sensed that blood

They did not stop fleeing in panic

And the mind saw them startled

So it spread its wings in fear and flew away

    No wonder I keep fluctuating

Like a pendulum that lost its stillness

If the earth had a heart that loves

People would not see a wall in it

And Hind does not care what we built

Your love, O Hind, was not a choice

When you shun us, we excuse the coquette

For your coquetry is but an apology

And in love there is something called

Aloofness, and you do not abandon aloofness

It is as if beauty prolongs with our lives

    To become through it diminished

    And beauty earns nothing if

Its lovers do not accept loss from it

Why do you shun me, O Hind?

Grant me a shadow behind you to walk

Grant me a breeze one day

That stirs your gown from your side

Grant me the rays of the brilliant sun

A light that leaves your cheek aflame

Grant me some drops of dew

When they spray over you scattering

Grant me a brother and grant me a child

Grant me a lad and grant me a neighbor

Grant after all that a speck of dust

To soar upon your feet, stirred

And I swear I will purify a soul

And refine passion and exalt dignity

Fear God, I saw the eyelids

Teach my soul in your presence humility

And you promised that I fear people

While I feared nothing but precaution

And you burdened me with life's disasters

With what no orbit knew where it turned

Pity me, O trinkets, I see the bracelets

Whisper secretly about my matter to the bracelet

Whenever you hear the tinkling of the trinkets

For they confide to each other about me

And do not be startled by the rustling clothes

Calling me when they tire of waiting

    Though my heart envies them

I wish it were the button among them

I wish I were like threads

Woven by this people into a gown

Whenever I say "I wish" for something

    I suffered from bitterly

I learned from the breast what you harbor

For the breast stood still as if gesturing

My solace is distance, and the stars' solace

    Is when her companionship disappears
