دعِ الشعرَ ما كلَّ امرئٍ يذكرونهُ

ببيتينِ أو شيءٍ من القولِ قوالُ

Leave poetry alone, not everyone you mention

With a couplet or some words is equal

ولو تخلقُ الأشعارُ في الرأسِ لم يكن

برأسكَ إلا القفرُ والشعرُ أغوالُ

If poems came to mind as easily as ideas

Your mind would be empty, and poetry cheap

رأيتكَ وزّاناً فلفظكَ كلّهُ

قناطيرُ لكنَّ المعاني مثقالُ

I've seen you versify, so your words are perfect

But the meaning has no weight, the rhymes don't stick

وهب للحصى شيئاً تغربلهُ بهِ

فهل لكلام كالحجارةِ غربالُ

If you sift random stones will you find gold

Are words that lack meaning worth the effort?
