How many lovers have suffered, yet none like my torment,
If someday I wish to harm my beloved,
Is there a heart but mine to suffer this?
Or take my share of pride?
Oh, if only I had two hearts - one sick with love of him
And one, after that, to heal me,
If only I had two souls - one, weary of the garden of companionship,
And another, vexed with separation.
How can one heart bear this love,
So strange to my disposition, yet so natural?
By God, love is the best of my qualities,
By God, love is the worst of my flaws!
