1. أرى الهجرَ أن تذكرَ الهجرَ لي

    فإنَّ القلوبَ بما تذكرُ

    I see estrangement, though you evoke estrangement in me,

    For hearts are moved by what they are reminded of.

  2. وإنَّ السماءَ إذا أبرقتْ

    غدتْ بعدَ إبروقها تمطرُ

    And verily the sky, when it lightens,

    Becomes, after its lightning, rain pouring.

  3. أخافُ عليكَ وما إن تخاف

    وأنتَ المطاعُ بما تأمرُ

    I fear for you, though you have no fear,

    You who are obeyed in all you command.

  4. وما آفةُ النفسِ بعدَ المتاب

    غلا الغرورُ بمن يغفرُ

    And the soul's flaw after remorse

    Is but the pride in one who forgives.
