1. يومٌ بهذي الليالي يشبهُ القمرا

    فإن رأى حلكاً في أفقها سفرا

    A day with these nights resembles the moon,

    If it sees a mole on its horizon, it journeys.

  2. تخالها ورقاً إن خلته ثمراً

    والعامُ غصنهما والأزمنُ الشجرا

    You would think it a leaf if it lacked fruit,

    And the year is their branch, and time is the tree.

  3. ما زالَ فيهِ بريقُ التاجِ من قِدَمٍ

    واللحظُ يزدادُ سحراً كلما فترا

    The gleam of the crown still shines in it

    And the glance grows more magical whenever it wanes.

  4. يومٌ جلا غرّةً في المجدِ سائلةً

    تناظرُ الشمس إن قاسوا بها الغُرَرا

    A day emerged, asking about glory,

    The sun gazes at it, should they compare it to the full moons.

  5. مرآةُ فكرِ مليكٍ فوقها انعكستْ

    أنوارهُ كغديرٍ مثَّلَ القمرا

    It is the mirror of the thoughts of a wise king,

    His lights were reflected on it like a pond depicting the moon.

  6. يضاحكُ التاجُ منها لمعةٌ سطعتْ

    من الجلالةِ يغشى ضؤُها البهرا

    The crown smiles from it, a radiance shone forth,

    From the majesty, its brightness overwhelms vision.

  7. عبدُ الحميدِ بهرتَ الخافقينِ فما

    ندري أبرقاً نرينا أم نرى قكرا

    Abdul Hamid, you dazzled the two horizons, so we cannot tell,

    Whether we see lightning or the planet Saturn.

  8. إن تغرسِ الرأيَ فالتسديدُ زهرتُهُ

    وإن هززتَ القنا أَجْنَيْنَكَ الظفرا

    If you plant reason, success is its flower,

    If you shake the spear, you will reap victory.

  9. ما بينَ سلمٍ وحربٍ أنتَ ربُّهما

    تركتَ هذا الورى في مأمنٍ حذِرا

    Between peace and war, you are the lord of both,

    You left this world cautious and wary.

  10. فلو تشاءُ أمرتَ النارَ فانطفأتْ

    ولو تشاءُ زجرتَ الماءَ فاستعرا

    If you wish, you could order fire and it would be extinguished,

    If you wish, you could rebuke water and it would blaze.

  11. ومن يكنْ قلبهُ في كلِّ حادثةٍ

    عيناً لفكرتِهِ لا يخطئُ النظرا

    He whose heart is, in every incident,

    An eye for his thought, does not miss sight.

  12. يا ضارباً بشبا السيفِ الذي ارتعدتْ

    لهُ الممالكُ أطعم سيفكَ الجزرا

    O you who strike with the swords of youth, for which empires trembled,

    Feed your sword on bridges.

  13. لا تخشَ زلزالها إن عصبةٌ رجفتْ

    فمن يكنْ معولاً لا يرهبُ الحجرا

    Do not fear their earthquake if a group trembles,

    For he who is a hammer does not dread stone.

  14. إذا سيوفكَ ظنوها صوالحةً

    فإنَّ أرؤسهم كانتْ لها أُكرا

    When your swords are thought to be lightning bolts

    Their heads were flashes of light for them.

  15. غرستَ عندهم نعماكَ في سبخٍ

    ومن يلومُ على ريِّ الثرى المطرا

    You planted your blessings in a swamp,

    Who would blame the rain for irrigating the land?

  16. وزارعُ الحبِّ لا ينفكُّ يبذرهُ

    وليسَ في وسعهِ إنباتُ ما بذرا

    The sower of love does not cease to sow it,

    It is not in his capacity to germinate what was sown.

  17. أرى على الأرضِ جرَّاراً لهُ لجبٌ

    تخالهُ الأرضُ أطواداً إذا انحدرا

    I see upon the earth a conqueror who has mountains,

    The earth views them as mounds when they slide.

  18. كأنّهُ يوم يرتجُّ الوغى شهبٌ

    تساقطَ الجو منها يرجمُ البشرا

    It is as if on the day war erupts, meteors,

    Fall from the sky, stoning people.

  19. من كلِّ ليثٍ إذا حفزتهُ قطرتْ

    أنيابهُ واستطارتْ عينهُ شررا

    From every lion, when a drop trickles into him,

    His fangs are bared and his eyes spark.

  20. يلقى صدى الموتِ في الآذانِ من فزعٍ

    كأنما ثارَ يدعوهُ إذا زأرا

    He meets the echo of death in ears out of horror,

    As if it rose calling him when it roared.

  21. أرى العناية صفت جيشهم كلماً

    حروفها قرئتْ ما زالَ منتصرا

    I see providence lined up his army in rows,

    Its letters were read but it remained victorious.

  22. أراهُ في الأرضِ معنى لا نظيرَ لهُ

    فما أكذبُ أن أدعوهُ مبتكرا

    I see him on earth peerless,

    How untrue it would be if I called him an innovator.

  23. يا عرشَ يلدزَ أنتَ النجمُ لا عطلتْ

    منكَ السماءُ التي أفلاكها الوزرا

    O throne that refuses to slip, you are the star that

    The sky from which its planets and burdens did not decline.

  24. غدا بكَ الملكُ وجناتٍ موردةٍ

    وأعيناً ملئتْ أجفانها حورا

    Tomorrow it takes the king and gardens of plenty,

    And eyes their eyelids filled with paradisal maidens.

  25. لا زلتَ تشرقُ بالنورِ الذي اقتبستْ

    منهُ العروشُ نجومَ الحكمةِ الزُّهرا

    You continue to shine with the light from which

    Thrones drew the stars of wisdom and flowers.

  26. كذاكَ يلقي شعاعُ الشمسِ بهجتهُ

    على القواريرِ حتى تشبهُ الدُّرَرَا

    Just so does the sun’s rays cast its joy

    Upon decanters until they resemble pearls.
