لئن منعوكَ سلكَ المنام

ما انفكَ ما بيننا ينقلُ

أراها وقد جعلتْ تمطلُ

ذكاءٌ تضيءُ ولا تنزلُ

I see her acting coyly

With intelligence lighting up but not coming down

يضنُّ الجمالُ بأربابهِ

وأهلُ الجمالِ بهِ أبخلُ

Beauty feels stingy towards its lovers

And the people of beauty are more stingy towards it

وسيانَ في الطيرِ عصفورةٌ

إذا انفلتتْ منكَ والبلبلُ

It's all the same with birds if a sparrow

Escapes you while the nightingale remains

فيا من جعلتُ لهُ خاتماً

متى تلبسُ الخاتمُ الأنملُ

So O you whom I made a ring for

When will you wear the ring on your finger?

تدوسينَ فوقَ الثرى مهجتي

وطيفكِ في أعيني يرفلُ

You tread upon my soul on the ground

While your specter in my eyes capers

فمنكِ إليَّ ومني إليكِ

كلانا لصاحبهِ يحملُ

From you to me and me to you

Each of us carries for the other

وذو الشوقِ يسعى على عينهِ

إذا قعدتْ بالهوى الأرجلُ

And the passionate one strives with his eye

When the legs in love become still

سلي الصبحَ كيفَ أراقَ الكرى

وعيني ما أوشكتْ تثملُ

Ask the dawn how it shed the vines

While my eye was about to shut

رمى الفجرَ فانفجرتْ عينهُ

دماً فأتى بالندى يغسلُ

The dawn threw its light and its eye burst

Bleeding, so the dew came to wash

وأضرمَ من شمسهِ شعلةً

فجفَّ على حرِّها المقتلُ

And it lit from its sun a flame

So upon its heat the slain dried

كذاكَ أرى الناسَ في غدرهم

تساوى الأواخرُ والأولُ

That's how I see people in their betrayal

The ends and starts are equal

أصالحُ قل لي متى نلتقي

فبعضيَ عن بعضهِ يسألُ

My friend, tell me when we will meet

أراكَ تؤيّدني في البيانِ

كما اتحدَّ الفلبُ والمِقْوَلُ

I see you aid me in rhetoric

As the starling and probe have united

ولولا الفؤادُ وميزاتهُ

لمالَ اللسانُ فلا يعدلُ

And were it not for the heart and its traits

The tongue would tilt so it wouldn't straighten

ألا أنذرَ الفئةَ الحاسدين

سيوفاً منا ضربتْ تفصلُ

Lo, I warn the envious band

Swords from us that will sever

وقل للعصافيرِ لا تبرحي

ولا تمرحي قد هوى الأجدلُ

And tell the birds do not flutter

Nor frolic, for the woodcock has fallen

عجبتُ لهمْ وعجيبٌ إذا

عجبتُ لمن لم يكنْ يعقلُ

I wonder at them and it's wondrous when

I wonder about those who lack reason

وما يستوي الجفنُ فيه الغبار

وإن أشبهَ الكحلَ والأكحلُ

The eyelid is not equal if it has dust

Even if it resembles kohl and kohl

هم نخلوني فماذا رأوا

اَأَمسكَ نورَ الضُّحى المنخلُ

لم يلقَ عاليها الأسفلُ

And the mouse came, so why didn't

The mountains meet its lowliness?

وكيفَ يخيفُ الهلالَ الدجى

ويرهبُ عنترةَ المنصلُ

How can the crescent frighten the darkness

And Antarah's sword the butcher?

رأوا ليَ في حكمتي ثانية

كما ينظرُ الواحدَ الأحولُ

They saw in my wisdom a seconder
