زمن كالربيعِ حلَّ وزالا

ليتَ أيامهُ خُلِقْنَ طِوالا

A time like spring came and went

If only its days were made long

يحسبُ الطفلُ أنه زمنُ الهمِّ

وما الهَمُّ يعرفُ الأطفالا

The child thinks it's the time of worry

Yet worries do not know children

يا بني الدرسِ من تمنَّى الليالي

كلياليكم تمنَّى المُحالا

O children of study, who wished for nights

Your nights wished for the impossible

ليلةٌ بعد ليلةٍ بعد أخرى

وليالي الهنا تمرُّ عِجالا

Night after night after another

And the nights here pass quickly

قد خبرنا الأنامَ في كلِّ حالٍ

فإذا الطفلُ أحسنُ الناسِ حالا

We have experienced people in every state

And the child is in the best state

وهو إنْ جدَّ لم يزَلْ في صعودٍ

وكذا البدرُ كانَ قبلُ هلالا

And if he persevered he did not stop ascending

And so was the crescent before a full moon

غيرَ أن الكسولَ في كلِّ يومٍ

يجد اليوم كلهُ أهوالا

Except the lazy every day

Finds the whole day full of horrors

ويرى الكتبَ والدفاترَ والأقلا

م وأوراقَ درسهِ أحمالا

And sees books, notebooks and papers

And homework like burdens

وإذا ما مشى إلى قاعةِ الدر

س ذراعاً يظنه أميالا

And when he walks to the classroom

An arm he thinks is miles

من يقمْ في الأمورِ بالجد يهنأ

والشفا للذين قاموا كسالى

Whoever perseveres in matters will be delighted

And healing is for those who stood up lazy

وزمانُ الدروسِ أضيقُ من أن

يجد الخاملونَ فيه مجالا

And the time of study is too short

For the idle to find room in it

أيها الطفلُ لا تضيعْ زماناً

لستَ تلقى كمثلهِ أمثالا

O child do not waste time

You will not find its like again

ربما نلتَ ما يفوت وهيها

ت إن فاتكَ الصِّبا أن تنالا

Maybe you will get what is missed, alas

If you missed youth, you cannot regain it
