    O heart, do not despair,

And O soul, do not despair,

If the deer fled, did you not find comfort

In the loneliness of my night, though I found no comfort?

The earth has narrowed around me, as if

From the constriction I have become imprisoned.

Worry obscured him, calling him to veil himself,

Thus the sun does not rise in the Howdah.

Unless you both help me find solace,

Then patience upon the drowsy eyes.

I knew you both to be a loving bird,

And your promises were green and flourishing,

But the heat of this passion has withered it

And the water of youth in it did not dry up.

And longing has clad you both in this humiliation,

And the passion has clothed you in what adorns you.

    It saddens me after that

That love will leave with the souls.

So may God acquaint the people of passion,

And those who are created without a comforter.

You see the youth, believing him dead,

Lying on the grave, not embalmed.

And it is enough for the passionate people to know

By sacrificing their heads bowed down.

The opinion of the wise and prudent young man was lost

    Between passion and eyes.

Just as sanity lost the sane people

    Between the wine and cups.

O morning star, if you rise,

Shine like a crown over heads.

And O crescent moon, if you journey,

As the cheek journeys in the sitting place.

And O meadow’s flower, if you strut,

The train of the gentlewomen and silks.

And O ear of the wind, if you understand,

The greetings of the miserable and wretched.

And O lip of the rose, if you kiss,

Eyes that open in the Narcissus.

And O bite of the Myrtle, a smoothness

Like the wrist of the tender and delicate.

And O cane of frankincense, a bending

    Like the flexible and slender.

Take to the one veiled from me greetings,

And say, “You forgot a man who did not forget.”
