1. نفرتْ والظباءُ ذاتَ نفارِ

    وتجنتْ عليهِ ذاتَ السوارِ

    She fled, and the doe along with her fled,

    And the one with the bracelets withdrew accusingly.

  2. لم يكن يعرف الهوى فرآها

    ورأى زهرة الهوى في الإزارِ

    He did not know love before seeing her,

    And saw the blossom of love on her robe.

  3. ورنتْ عينها إليهِ بأن لا

    تتبعنا فمرَّ في الآثارِ

    Her eyes winked at him as if saying:

    "Do not follow us", so he passed by their tracks.

  4. يتوارى عن العيونِ وإن لم

    يكُ عن كاتبيهِ بالمتواري

    He hides from eyes though not

    From the writers with him.

  5. ويدورُ الهوىبلحظيهِ ما بي

    نَ يمينٍ تخوفاً ويسارِ

    And love circles in his glances between

    Fearing the right and the left.

  6. وهي تختالُ كالغصونِ إذ ما

    لَ بهنَّ النسيمُ في الإسحارِ

    And she sways like branches when

    The morning breeze blows at dawn,

  7. أو مهاةِ النقا إذا رأتِ القا

    نصَ لكنها بغيرِ انذعارِ

    Or a frightened doe when she sees the hunter

    But without panic.

  8. يحسبُ الناسُ طيبها نفسُ الصب

    حِ على زهرةِ روضةٍ معطارِ

    People think her charm is the smell

    Of a scented garden.

  9. ويظنونها من الحورِ لولا الحو

    رُ محجوبةٌ عن الإبصارِ

    And see her as a houri but for

    Houris being hidden from sight.

  10. ويخالونَ وجهها قمرَ الأف

    قِ على ما بأوجهِ الأقمارِ

    And think her face the full moon

    Among other moons.

  11. ويقولونَ فتنةٌ قد برَّها اللَّ

    هُ سبحانه فجلَّ الباري

    And say she is a beauty God has created

    So Glorious is the Maker.

  12. خطرتْ تخطفُ القلوبَ وقد سلَّ

    تْ سيوفاً من لحظها البتّارِ

    She came tempting hearts, having already

    Drawn swords from her sharp glances.

  13. في دلالٍ تجرُّ مثلَ الطواوي

    سِ على عجبهنَّ فضلُ الإزارِ

    Coyly dragging her gown like

    Peacocks proud of their dress.

  14. والثرى كلُّهُ قلوبٌ ضعافٌ

    خشيتْ صولةَ الهوى الجبارِ

    And all the land is faint hearts

    Fearing love's assault.

  15. والفتى يتبعُ الفتاةَ وقد أم

    سى بما مسَّ قلبهُ غيرُ دارِ

    The youth pursues the girl, obsessed

    With what afflicted his heart beyond cure.

  16. ورأى قصرها فطارَ وطارتْ

    وادعى وادعتْ حقوقَ الجوارِ

    He saw her palace so he flew and she flew too,

    Claiming the rights of a neighbor.

  17. وأتتهُ يلوحُ في وجهها البش

    رُ وحيتْ تحيةَ استبشارِ

    She came to him, cheer on her face

    And greeted with joy.

  18. ينثني خلفها من الخُرَّدِ العي

    ن ِرياحينٌ طبنَ كالأزهارِ

    Behind her breeze fragrant as flowers

    From fluttering sleeves.

  19. هنَّ رباتُ كلِّ ذاتِ جمالٍ

    ولها وحدها خلقنَ جواري

    They are mistresses of all beauty

    And for them alone are maidens created.

  20. فنشرنَ الكؤوسَ وانبعثَ الله

    و وقامتْ قيامةُ الأوتارِ

    They spread the cups and the vine breathed

    And the strings were plucked.

  21. وحكى صوتهنَّ أصواتَ داو

    دَ فهبتْ سواجعُ الأطيارِ

    Their voices told David's songs

    And the birds were passionately roused.

  22. وتراخى الظلامُ فانفجرَ الصبحُ

    وسالتْ ذكاءُ سيلَ النضارِ

    Darkness receded and dawn broke

    Wit gushed like the flow of life.

  23. وبكى الغيدُ رحمةً لفتاهنَّ

    ولكن بمدمعٍ غيرَ جاري

    The clouds wept in pity for her girls

    But with a dry tear.

  24. ثمَّ ودَّعنهُ فقامَ حزيناً

    ينثني بينَ ذلّةِ وانكسارِ

    Then they bade him farewell so he rose

    Bent with humility and remorse.

  25. ولو أنَّ الهوى يمسُّ قلوبَ الأُس

    دِ ذلتْ نفوسُ تلكَ الضواري

    Had love touched lions' hearts

    Those wild cats would have been tamed.

  26. لا وذاتِ السوارِ ما نقضَ العهدَ

    ولا خانهُ لا وذاتِ السوارِ

    No! She of the bracelet never broke her vow

    Nor betrayed it, she of the bracelet.

  27. صانَ أسرارها وباحتْ بما في

    صدرها من ودائعِ الأسرارِ

    She guarded her secrets but unveiled

    What her breast contained of mysteries.

  28. وأصاختْ إلى الوشاةِ فلجتْ

    في التجني ولجَّ في الاعتذارِ

    She cried to the slanderers who plunged

    Into fault then plunged into apologies.

  29. واستعارَ الزمانُ ايامَ ذاكَ الأُ

    نسِ والدهرُ لا يردُ العواري

    Time borrowed days of that companionship

    But time will not restore what is past.

  30. ونأتْ دارها فباتَ بلا قلبٍ

    ولا مسعدٌ سوى التذكارِ

    He came to her abode, heartless,

    With no joy but memories.

  31. وجنونُ المحبِّ يومَ تراهُ

    في ديارٍ وقلبهُ في ديارِ

    A lover's madness is to be

    In lands while his heart is in lands.
