1. زمانٌ عيشُنا فيه اضطرارُ

    كما تحتَ الثرى دُفن النضارُ

    The time we live in is one of force

    As the blossoms were buried under the earth

  2. نحاذرهُ ومن يخشَ الرزايا

    فاصعبُ من رزاياهُ الحذارُ

    We fear it, and whoever fears calamities

    More difficult than its calamities is caution

  3. ويلهو بعضُنا كالشاةِ ترعى

    وقدْ حدت بجانبها الشفارُ

    Some of us play like sheep grazing

    While next to them the wolves lurk

  4. وإطراقُ الزمانِ يغرُّ قوماً

    وما إطراقهُ إلا افتكارُ

    The passage of time seduces people

    Yet its passage is nothing but scheming

  5. يظنُ المرءُ أن قد فرَّ منهُ

    ولكن كانَ منهُ لهُ الفرارُ

    One thinks he has escaped from it

    But in fact, escaping it was impossible

  6. إذا وسعتْ في قفصٍ لطيرٍ

    فكيفَ يفرُّ والقفصُ المطارُ

    If it widens the cage of a bird

    How can it escape when the cage is still shut?

  7. أرىما تمنحُ الدنيا هموماً

    فأهنى العيشِ أمنٌ وافتقارُ

    I see the world only gives worries

    So the joy of life is safety and poverty

  8. وكيفَ يُسرُّ ذو دينٍ تراهُ

    يزيدُ ديونهُ هذا اليسارُ

    How can the religious be happy to see

    His debts growing with this wealth?

  9. لعمركَ إنما الأموالُ حزنٌ

    فإن العمرَ ثوب مستعارُ

    By your life, money is nothing but sorrow

    For life is but a borrowed garment

  10. وما ماتَ الغنيُّ بغيرِ همٍّ

    وأيةُ حسرةٍ هذا الخسارُ

    No rich man died without worries

    What regrets this loss brings!

  11. كأن المالَ أقلامٌ فمنها

    بسفرِ العمرِ حذف واختصارُ

    It is as if money is pens, and with it

    Pages of life are deleted and abridged

  12. كأنَّ خزانةَ الأموالِ قبرٌ

    ففي نفسِ الغنيِّ بها انكسارُ

    A treasury of money is like a grave

    In the soul of the rich is its wreckage

  13. ويا عجباً من الأقدارِ تجري

    وبعدَ وقوعِ ما تجري تدارُ

    How strange are the turns of fate!

    After things happen, they are reversed

  14. رأيتُ الفقرَ للفقراءِ حظاً

    وفي أهلِ الغنى لهم اعتبارُ

    I saw poverty as the lot of the poor

    While for the rich was their regard

  15. وإن نالَ الفقيرَ الهمُّ يوماً

    فأهونُ من لظى النارِ الشرارُ

    If worries afflict the poor one day

    It is lighter than the sparks of fire

  16. يذلُ لهُ الزمانُ فلا يبالي

    بما يأتي المساءُ ولا النهارُ

    Time humiliates him, yet he cares not

    What the evening or morning brings

  17. فيا كوخَ الفقيرِ غدوتَ دنيا

    وكلُّ الأرضِ للفقراءِ دارُ

    Oh hut of the poor, you have become a world

    While the whole earth is the home of the poor

  18. على تلكَ القصورِ أرى دخاناً

    أخفَ عليكَ منهُ ذا الغبارُ

    Over those palaces I see smoke

    Lighter upon you than this dust

  19. وفيكَ سلامةٌ من كلِّ همٍّ

    وفيها من همومِ الدهرِ نارُ

    In you is safety from all worries

    While in them is the fire of the worries of fate

  20. عليكَ الشمسُ تاجٌ لم ينلهُ

    سواكَ ومن حلى الظلِّ السوارُ

    The sun is upon you like a crown none attained

    Except you, and the bracelets of shade are your adornment

  21. وإن يكن الزمانُ لهُ أميرٌ

    فمن فيهِ لذا الدهرِ احتقارُ

    Even if time has a ruler

    Those in it have contempt for this age

  22. كأن الدهرَ أليسَ جلدَ هرٍّ

    وكلُّ مملكٍ في الناسِ فارُ

    It is as if time is nothing but snake skin

    And every ruler among people is a rat

  23. وما يغني كبارَ الإسمِ شيءٌ

    وأنفسهم وإن كبروا صغارُ

    The big names bring them no benefit

    They themselves, however big, are small

  24. فيا كوخَ الفقيرِ إذاً سلاماً

    فأنتَ لبهجةِ الدنيا وقارُ

    Oh hut of the poor, greetings to you

    You are the dignity and honor of the world

  25. وما تلكَ القصور سوى ذنوبٌ

    وأنتَ لها من الدهرِ اعتذارُ

    Those palaces are nothing but sins

    While you are its excuse to the days
