I fear his eyelids that shed no tears

And my sword's edge that strikes no blows

Then where are these hands of mine? And this sword in my hand?

Why does my heart deny its facets?

It's as if electricity courses through me

When the full moon rises or its eyebrow arches

Show me, my heart, how sorrow has cracked it

And how passion has claimed it with its afflictions

If my heart does not share my aspirations

Then it is no heart of mine, and I am not its keeper

One evening I rode the tramway

And saw the revolving sphere, its stars appeared

I thought it a heart pulled by passion

Yielding though unaware what draws it near

Then from its corners appeared a maiden

The moon herself, though her setting she neared

Smiling at times and frowning at others

As the feeble-minded fight their phantom fears

I wrote above her brow a verse

Where love is glimpsed by those it does not address

When the heart saw it, it felt secure and emboldened

To court her, writing on my ribs that caress

    I am but passion's plaything

Drawn to where its rule is strong and success assured

I rose up like a lion leaving its den

After its shelters were smashed and claws demurred

I resigned myself to joy and passion

Creeping through my heart on scurrying feet

She lowered her gaze, then looked up and resigned

After the water's bitterness, clear and sweet

By God, how sweet the words I heard from her

As though an orphan comforted by his dear

It is the wine, but for its intoxication

It is the magic, but for its harm and fear

I said, I know love is, by God

A heart's demands that know no bounds or peer

She replied, yes and if you wish, know too

It is time's afflictions, countless and severe

I unveiled to her a passionate, joyful love

Where duty contends with me and I persevere

I said, this heart is possessed by madness

Else what leaps inside my ribs with no veneer?

She swayed like a sapling, its branches outstretched

And when I sensed the poetry, flags appeared

She delighted in my words and laughed

As though I were a babe she bounced on her knee

Once my breast had doused hopes' light

And was as dark as the night that disappeared at dawn's first cheer

She said, I fear the people, for in love

The ignoble spy and noble interfere

Then she startled my heart, not knowing

My heart is firm, tough, it does not fear

When she saw me distraught but undismayed

Another distracted her, the hunted deer

She left saying, such is the fate of love

After the affair begins, ends draw near

She left my heart alone on the tram

Crying out, but who might answer its call and volunteer?

I lived without a heart and gave up loving dolls

Nothing deters a man like experience and souvenirs
