1. مضى والتقى نجمين في أفق جَدَّا

    وخلَّفني من نورهِ أنا والمجدا

    He passed away, meeting two stars on the horizon

    Leaving me with his glory, myself and glory

  2. فإن ابكهِ تنهلَّ للشعر مطرةٌ

    على كل أرض تفجرُ البرق والرعدا

    If I weep for him, poetry rains a shower

    Upon every land, lightning and thunder erupt

  3. وإن أرث من أوصافه هبت الصبا

    مع الشمس ترمي في اشعتها وردا

    If I inherit any of his attributes, the morning blows

    With the sun, throwing roses in its rays

  4. ثكلتُ يراعي ان تركت على الشجى

    ضنى كبدٍ لم استجدَّ لهُ وجدا

    I am wretched if I leave upon sadness

    A grudging liver that I did not find joy for

  5. وما هو شعري يوم ينتثر البكا

    اذا لم اساقط من لآلئهِ عقدا

    My poetry is not poetry the day it scatters weeping

    If it does not drop pearls from its strands

  6. ولا هو شعري يا أبي ان تركتهُ

    ولم تحفظ الأيام منهً لك الحمدا

    Nor is it my poetry, oh father, if I leave it

    And the days do not keep for you all praise from it

  7. بكيتك بل نفسي فوالله ان أرى

    بيومك إلاَّ ركن نفسي قد انهدا

    But I cried for myself, by God, if I see

    A day of yours except a pillar of my soul collapsed

  8. بموتك قد مات لقلبي مواعدٌ

    من الدهر كان الصبرُ من بينها وعدا

    With your death, promises died in my heart

    From fate, patience was among them a promise

  9. فيا موثق الدنيا بآمالهِ اتئد

    فما غيرُ هذي النفس تحكمها شدَّا

    So O certifier of life with its hopes, bid farewell

    For what else rules this soul but firmness?

  10. ويا طالب الأيام صفواً أما ترى

    ليومك ما يبيضُّ إلا ليسودَّا

    And O seeker of pure days, do you not see

    Your day whitens only to blacken?

  11. تجزئنا الأيام في حركاتها

    فإن تركت فرداً فقد أخذت فردا

    Days divide us in their motions

    If they left a single, they took a single

  12. فيا ليت هذا الموت يأتي بمرَّةٍ

    ولكن لأمرٍ ما أعاد وما أبدى

    Oh, if only this death came once

    But for a matter neither reversing nor renewing

  13. وأولُ موتِ الحيّ موتُ حبيبهِ

    وكالفقد وجدانٌ طوى تحتهُ فقدا

    And the first death of the living is the death of their beloved

    Like loss, sadness has shrouded loss

  14. يعيش الفتى بعد الحبيب كأنهُ

    بقي خطأً مما يرى نكداً عمدا

    The young man lives after the beloved as if

    A mistake remained that he sees intentional misery

  15. وما يعرف المفجوعُ طالت حياتهُ

    أفي عيشهِ ما امتدّ أم موتهُ امتدَّا

    The anguished does not know if his long life

    In his living extended or his death extended?

  16. كأن همومي من فراق احبتي

    على قدر ما بيني وبينهم بعدا

    As if my sorrows from parting with loved ones

    Match what distance is between us and them

  17. أبيما أبي لو اسكن الله في الثرى

    ملائكةً لاستحدثوا عندهُ ودَّا

    O father, if God settled angels in the burial ground

    They would renew affection at him

  18. ولو طلبت عيناك في الارض مشبهاً

    مثالاً سماويًّا لا شبههُ جدَّا

    If I sought your eyes in the earth comparing

    A heavenly example, none resemble it

  19. هدًى يفجرُ الليل الدَّجوجيّ سمته

    فما كان الاَّ طلعةَ الفجر أو أهدى

    Guidance erupting the gloomy night in its path

    It was only the dawn’s rising or brighter

  20. وعلمٌ اذا رجَّافهُ انحلّ نوءهُ

    رأى الناس معنى مايسمونهُ رشدا

    And a banner whose shaking loosens its peg

    People see the meaning they name righteousness

  21. ومن زهر نور الله في روض قلبهِ

    حديث لهُ لا اثم فيهِ ولا حقدا

    And from the blossom of God's light in the garden of his heart

    A discourse for him with no sin or hatred

  22. يرى حاضروهُ أنما هو مسجدٌ

    بما أُلبست اخلاقهُ الطهر والزُّهدا

    Those who visit him see he is a temple

    Robed with purity and devotion

  23. فيا موتُ ما قدَّمتَ منهُ لربهِ

    سوى زهرة في كف خالقها تندَى

    So O death, what you presented of him to his Lord

    Except a flower held in the palm of its Creator

  24. واروع في عليا معدٍّ اذا اعتزَى

    وفي النَّفر الغرّ الكرام اذا عدّا

    And more wondrous in lofty heights when soaring

    And among the noble youths when counting

  25. ترى الجبل الراسي بمثل وقارهِ

    رسا فسما فاستجمع الخلُق الصَّلدا

    You see the firmly seated mountain in its dignity

    Settled so it transcended creation’s gathered might

  26. تروعك منهُ هيبةٌ عمريةٌ

    وحسبك من امسى لهُ عمر جدَّا

    Your awe of him is Umar’s majesty

    And enough that one who lived to him lived fully

  27. وما هي الاَّ عن نزارِ ويعرُبٍ

    حبا بطلٌ جعدٌ بها بطلاً جعدا

    And it is but of Nizar and Europius

    Love for a curled-haired hero by a curled-haired hero

  28. فجاءَ كنصل السيف يهتزُّ مصلتاً

    يدالله منهُ وحدها سنَّت الحدَّا

    So he came like the sword’s blade shaking a sharp edge

    God’s hand alone from it dictated severity

  29. كما اعتصرتهُ انفسٌ عربيةٌ

    رماحاً وأسيافاً وألسنة لدا

    As if Arab souls wrung him out

    As spears, swords and eloquent tongues

  30. فمن يلقهُ يلق الزمان بملئهِ

    جحا جحةَ بل ملئهِ حسباً عدَّا

    Whoever meets him, meets time in its fullness

    Nay, meets his fullness as enough counted

  31. ومن يتأملهُ يميناً وشمأَلاً

    رأى ههنا مجداً ومن ههنا مجدا

    Whoever contemplates him left and right

    Saw glory here and glory there

  32. ومن كان في التاريخ لحدُ جدودهِ

    تجدهُ من التاريخ قد ورث المهدا

    Whoever in history was limited by his ancestors

    You find him history itself inherited glory

  33. وكم شيمة كالعضب منهُ انتضيتها

    وألغيتها في غيرهِ طبعت غمدا

    And however much an attribute like straightness he embodied

    And nullified in others, sheathed in its scabbard

  34. بما بلغت نفسُ الفتى يعرف الفتى

    وذو الجدّ ان يهزل فما ان عدا جدَّا

    With what the young man's soul reached, the young man knows

    And the one of lineage, if he jokes, did not transgress

  35. وفي الناس ابطال ترى الفرد منهمُ

    وحيداً ومن اخلاقهِ حشد الجندا

    Among people are heroes you see the individual among them

    Alone, and from his manners a mass of troops

  36. ولن تبصر الليث الغضنفر في امرىءٍ

    اذا لم تشاهد انفساً خلقت أُسدا

    You will not see the fierce lion in a man

    Unless you witness souls created lions

  37. على أنهُ أندى حناناً من الندى

    واعطفُ من رد النسيم اذا ردَّا

    Yet he is more gentle than dew

    And more compassionate than the blowing breeze returning

  38. وما كنت ادري اهوَ في برده اغتدى

    ام الملك البسامُ قد لبس البردا

    I did not know, did he in his coldness go too far

    Or did the gentle King wear coldness?

  39. وما قبلهُ للحب قبلٌ عرفتهُ

    ولا بعدهُ اُلفي لذاك الرضا بعدا

    No kiss of love preceded the kiss I knew of him

    Nor will I find after that consent, any consent

  40. وللروح عيش من وجوه تحيطها

    فوجه يرى بؤساً ووجه يرى رغدا

    The soul has a living from faces surrounding it

    A face sees misery and a face sees luxury

  41. واشهد ما في الارض من صنع ربها

    كقلب اب برٍّ يحبُّ بهِ الولدا

    And I witness what is in the earth of its Lord's making

    Is like the heart of a righteous father loving his son

  42. فلولا حنانُ الوالدين لما رأى

    بنو الارض شيئاً يعقلون بهِ الخلدا

    If not for the affection of parents, the children of earth

    Would not have seen anything making them understand eternity

  43. ومن حبِّ آباءِ الصغار صغارهم

    تعوَّدُ روح الطفل ان تسكن الجلدا

    From love of young fathers for their little ones

    The infant soul becomes accustomed to inhabit the flesh

  44. ولو نظر القومُ الغلاةُ لأيقنوا

    معادَهُم ما دام آباؤهم مبدا

    Had the people - the extremists - contemplated

    They would be certain of their destruction as long as their fathers exist

  45. نعاك لسان الغيب في مسمع التقى

    من البضعة الغراء يقصدها قصدا

    Heaven's tongue exempted you in the hearing of the devout

    From the precious daughter it intended directly

  46. يؤذنها في مطلع الفجر مخبراً

    بموت ابيها وهي تسمعُ ما اهدى

    Informing her at dawn, conveying

    The news of her father's death while she listens to the best guidance

  47. فلولاك لم ترجع الى الارض رجعةٌ

    تذكرها جبريل والوحيَ والعهدا

    If not for you, no return to earth would have occurred

    That Gabriel, revelation and the covenant would remember

  48. وان ذكروا ندًّ لعلمك في الورى

    فلن يذكروا في هذه أبداً ندَّا

    If they mentioned a peer for your knowledge in existence

    Then they will never mention for this, ever, a peer

  49. على فضلك البرهان جاءَت بهِ السما

    ففي الأرض من هذا يطيق لهُ جحدا

    The proof for your favor came from heaven

    So who on earth can tolerate denying it?

  50. ويا ابتي إن الوداع لغايةٍ

    أكدُّ إليها الدهرَ في سيرهِ كدا

    Oh father, farewell is for an end

    Fate insists upon in its course firmly

  51. ومن اركبته الأرض انعمها انتهى

    بحيث انتهى من يركب العيشةَ النكدا

    Whoever earth carried and provided her bounty

    Ended where the wretched life ended

  52. بدائرة الاعمار شرقٌ ومغربٌ

    ولكن يسمى ذاك نحساً وذا سعدا

    With the cycle of lifespans an east and west

    But that is called ill-fortune and this, fortune

  53. ومن حيثما يممت نحو محيطها

    تراهُ على كل الجهات ارتمى سدا

    From whichever direction I turned towards its ocean

    You see it in every direction cast a barrier

  54. خلقنا بارض كوّرت وتقلبت

    فمهما يدُر فيها فمنقلبٌ ضدَا

    We were created on an earth rounded and overturning

    So wherever one turns on it, opposed

  55. عليك سلامُ الله ما بين روحهِ

    وقبركَ يمضى من رواح إلى مغدى

    Peace of God be upon you from between His spirit

    And your grave, passing from spirits to the resting place

  56. ويا خيرَ مولًى انت ارحمُ رحمةً

    واكرمُ من تجزي مكارمهُ عبدا

    O best master, you are the most merciful of mercies

    And most generous of those whose generosity rewards a servant
