1. حملْ فؤادكَ ما يطيقُ ولا تكن

    حزناً فإن الحزنَ ليس يطاقُ

    Bear what your heart can bear, and do not be

    Sorrowful, for sorrow cannot be borne

  2. كم مملقٍ أمسى الثراء ببابهِ

    ولكم رماهُ على الثرى الإملاقُ

    How many a flatterer has prosperity left

    Standing at his door, while fickleness has cast him down!

  3. واقنع برزقكَ ما كفاكَ فإنما

    زاد المسافرِ هذهِ الأرزاقُ

    Be content with your sustenance, for it suffices you,

    While extra provision burdens the traveller

  4. والناسُ كالركبِ الذين إذا سروا

    ناموا ولكن المطيَ تساق

    People are like a caravan: when they travel on,

    They sleep, while the riding-beasts are driven along
