طال السبات فشأننا استلقاء
فكأنما شلت لنا الأعضاء
Our slumber was so long, as if paralysis numbed our limbs.
It seems that sleep implies to us the death of life.
إن المنام عن الحياة يدلّنا
ناموا ويكفي أنكم أحياء
Sleep, for it suffices you are still alive.
A soul rises, repeated by the nostrils,
نفس تصعّده الأنوف مرددا
ونفوسهم تمشي بها الأهواء
While their souls are led astray by passions.
Laziness, with its deathly feeling, has sentenced them.
كسل قضى بالموت في إحساسهم
وقف على أجفاننا الإغضاء
Drowsiness has conquered our eyelids.
The arrows of fate pierced our bodies,
رشقت سهام الدهر في أجسامنا
عجبا وما شعرت بها الأحشاء
Yet our innards did not feel them.
The ignorant refuse to be driven like cattle,
العجم تنفر أن تساق بشة
والنار تقدحها لك الصماء
Yet deaf stones are set ablaze by you.
They are used to sitting on chairs,
ألفت مجاثمها المقاعد وارتقت
بالناهضين الهمة القعساء
While the ambitious soar high above the clouds.
If illnesses were asked about our condition,
بالأرض تلتصق الجنوب وغيرنا
فوق السحاب يدوسه وطاء
They would complain to them about us.
These are the chronicles of ancestors,
لو تسأل الأدواء عما عندها
من أمرنا لشكت بنا الأدواء
Scripts that glad tidings speak of.
Your pride in heritage was not enough,
هذي تاريخ الجدود وكلها
صحف تطيب بذكرها الأنباء
As the sons now follow their fathers’ footsteps.
God has clothed you in nothing but honor,
لم يكف فخرك بالتليد وإنما
تنحو خطى آبائها الأبناء
Bestowed upon you by the noble nation.
The crown is Islam, abstinence its center,
اللّه لم يلبسك إلا عزة
خلعت عليها الملة السمحاء
In it lies the precious, well-protected home.
It undoubtedly provides guidance and lessons to mortals,
تاج هو الاسلام مركزه النهى
فيه المنزل درة عصماء
Through it comes guidance, and from you, attentiveness.
They went astray and fell into abysses.
لا ريب فيه هدى وذكرى للورى
منه الرشاد ومنكم الإصغاء
They could have succeeded had they wished so.
It contains all the fundamentals of knowledge,
ضلوا فضلوا في المهاوي سقطا
ولهم به أن يسعدوا لو شاءوا
The treasure’s magic lies in ideas.
Examine the flowers in their tents,
للعلم فيه الأمهات جميعها
كنز طلاسمه هي الآراء
It is none other than the splendid garden.
And extract gems from its depths,
افحص عن الأزهار في أكمامها
إن هو إلا الروضة الفيحاء
Its brilliant rays have dazzled minds.
God protects it and its people,
واستخرج الياقوت من أغواره
بهر العقول شعاعه الوضاء
No enemies have managed to extinguish it.
اللّه حافظه وحافظ أهله
ما حاولت إطفاءه الأعداء
