I served you, O my lord, faithfully,

And far be it from me to betray you.

Yet truth became the cause of my imprisonment,

And truth lay captive in my heart.

Your exalted office proved a veil,

Though I had thought it an impregnable fortress.

That office compelled me to withdraw,

Because I was your faithful servant.

The government will not be pleased with you until

The loyal flee from the court.

Nor shall we be pleased with it until

It enacts that constitution among us.
