Peace be upon you from across the sea, wherever
you may settle. Do not grieve—such is the way of things, even as
we have wept; yet let our weeping not trouble you.
For which of you is truly reckoned a criminal?
But this is the way of the free; this is their fate.
Then you may say: exile has become a ladder.
We too shall meet what, for truth’s sake, the likes of you have met,
and rise as the stars rise through the heavens.
And where now is Rida, who once dwelt in a house of exile,
at times in hunger and at times in thirst?
Today he sits upon the seat of command, a ruler,
surrounded by those once humbled within the homeland.
Take heart, you who have journeyed far, for surely
each shall return, honored, to the province.
The Judge will take vengeance upon every traitor
who seeks to dissolve a union firmly ordained.
Before he dies, give him the tidings of disgrace—a stigma
that makes him taste gall from the cup of ignominy.
History will preserve for him a disfigured memory
and marshal against him a vast army of curses.
It will consign him to the greatest losers, as punishment,
and scatter him, cast down like shattered straw.
The mark of every hypocrite lies upon his face,
so that every Muslim among us may take warning.
Such is the fate of traitors—and of every one like him;
so has God spoken of them, and crushed them utterly.
