1. وخز اليراع كوخز الرمح في الألم

    فاضرب بأيهما من شئت وانتقم

    The stab of insult is like the stab of a spear in pain

    So strike with whichever you wish and take revenge

  2. كلاهما آلة للفتك صالحة

    وما سلاحك إلا في يد وفم

    They are both equally lethal instruments

    And your weapon is only in your hand and mouth

  3. الهجو كالقتل محظور ومنتبذ

    والعرض كالنفس في هتك وهدر دم

    Revilement is forbidden like murder and abhorred

    And honor is like the soul in violation and bloodshed

  4. وفي القصاص يكون الأمر منعكسا

    والحكم ذو الدور في الوجدان والعدم

    In retaliation the matter becomes reversed

    And the recurring judgment in existence and nothingness

  5. كم غارة شنّها حسان منتصرا

    للسيد الخلق بالأمضى من الكلم

    How many raids did Hasan launch victoriously

    For the Master of mankind with the sharpest words

  6. الشعر كالورد في طيب وفي إبر

    يوذي وينفع في حرب وفي سلم

    Poetry is like roses in fragrance and in thorns

    It hurts and benefits in war and in peace

  7. فاصفع بحد قوافيه إذا امتشقت

    واضرب بأضربه الفتاكة الرجم

    So slap with the meter of its rhymes if you are enraged

    And strike with its most potent verses like stoning

  8. ما كان لي في لحوم الناس مسغبة

    تفضي لإبقائهم جلدا على عظم

    I never had a taste for insulting people’s flesh

    Leaving them only skin on bone

  9. وكنت مزدريا بالهجو منخجلا

    فيه فأكرهت عنه غير محتشم

    I used to spurn revilement ashamed of it

    Not dignified enough for it

  10. يسوقك الكلب أحيانا لتحصبه

    فتنحني منه للأحجار ولحمم

    Sometimes a dog will lead you to pelt it with stones

    So you recoil from it to rocks and embers

  11. لست المسمى من حالت قذارته

    بين ارتسامه والمخطوط من اقلمي

    I am not the one named whose filth

    Prevented it being penned by my pen

  12. أبقيته ليد الأيام تصفعه

    صفع الإهانة من راس إلى قدم

    I left it for the hand of time to slap it

    The slap of disgrace from head to toes

  13. وصنت نفسي عن ذكر اللئام فما

    أولى الظما بي إذا ما الري من كرم

    And I protected myself from mentioning the vile so

    Is it not most befitting me when the honorable show benevolence
