1. سألت عليك القبر لو نطق القبر

    أيا نخبة الأحرار ممن لها الصدر

    I asked the grave about you, if only the grave could speak

    O elite of the free, with courageous hearts

  2. فقدتك ما بين النجوم استنارة

    وفي الليلة الظلماء يفتقد البدر

    I lost you among the stars, illuminated

    And in the dark night, the full moon is missed

  3. فقدتك قبل اليوم فيه وبعده

    ويفقدكم مصر ويفقدكم عصر

    I missed you before the day, and after it

    Egypt misses you, and your era misses you

  4. وأنسى ولا أنسى المسجي وقد همى

    عليه من الأحداق هاطلها القطر

    I forget, and don’t forget, the buried one, as

    Tears poured down from eyes upon him

  5. ذكرتك والأنفاس منك أخيرة

    تجود بها والروح يصحبها الطهر

    I remembered you, while the breaths from you are last

    Your soul accompanied by purity

  6. تنادي على الأستاذ خلك لاهجا

    بذكره نادى الحر في يومها الحر

    Calling to the teacher, leaving a mark on him

    The free called him in their day of freedom

  7. تلهيت بالخضرا عن الموت صابرا

    تفكر في مسجونها هكذا الصبر

    Distracted by the greens from death, patient

    Thinking of its prisoner, thus is patience

  8. تنادي بأعلى الصوت يا تونس التي

    لي اليوم في الأنفاس من كرها عطر

    Calling loudly, Oh Tunisia, which today

    Has from hatred, in my breaths, a scent

  9. أشم من الفردوس عاطرة الشذى

    وأحجوه من خضرائنا ذلك الزهر

    I smell from Paradise the fragrance of delight

    And sing it from our greens, that blossom

  10. تنادي إلى أن أرجع الروح ربها

    وبويع في الدنيا خليفتها الذكر

    Calling until I return the soul to its Lord

    And the successor in life has paid allegiance to it

  11. وقامت تعزيني القوافي بواكيا

    وعزّى جميع الناس في يومها القطر

    The rhymes console me, crying

    And all the people consoled on its rainy day

  12. ذكرتك إذ أوصيت خلك بالرثا

    وتاجك أهل أن يرصعه الدر

    I remembered you when you entrusted your people with eulogy

    And your crown deserved to be adorned with pearls

  13. وما خنت عهدي في الوصية إنما

    تأخرت في التأبين مذ خانني الشعر

    I did not betray my promise in the will, but only

    Delayed the elegy since poetry betrayed me

  14. نظمت عقود الدمع اذ ذاك لؤلؤا

    إليك ودرّ الشعر غاض به البحر

    I composed strands of tears like pearls

    And the poetry's pearls made the sea roll

  15. أقول وقد شاهدت نعشك ماشيا

    لئن ضاع ذخري فهو في له ذخر

    I say, having witnessed your coffin walking

    If I lost my treasure, it is to one who has treasure

  16. وفي كل حين كان حزني مجددا

    عليك وفي الصديق يرزؤني الدهر

    And my sorrow was always renewed for you

    And time hurts me for my friend

  17. متى التفتت عيناي كنت أمامها

    مثال السنا والمرئيات به كثر

    Whenever I glanced, you were before my eyes

    An example of brilliance, sights of you are many

  18. فلست بخاف عن عيوني وإنما

    وجودك في الأشيا هو الروح والسر

    I do not hide you from my eyes, but rather

    Your existence in things is the soul and secret

  19. وكنت إلى الأيام بدر سنائها

    ولولا سناء البدر ما عرف الشهر

    You were to the days, the full moon of its brilliance

    Without the full moon's brilliance, the month is not known

  20. وجدتك في فني وجدتك في الحجى

    وجدتك في الشعار هذا هو العمر

    I found you in my art, I found you in discourse

    I found you in ideals, this is life

  21. تخرجت عني في القوافي مساجلا

    فمني لها شطر ومنك لها شطر

    You came out through rhymes, debating

    So half is from me, and half from you

  22. يذكرني علم العروض براغب

    يسائلني عنه ليعلو له القدر

    Prosody reminds me of Rāghib

    Asking about him to elevate his worth

  23. يذكرني روض القريض بزهرة

    خدمت بها الإسلام حقا لك الأجر

    The meadow of poetry reminds me of its flower

    With which I served Islam, truly for you is the reward

  24. تذكرني تلك الرسائل شاكيا

    من الدهر والأيام من شأنها الغدر

    Those epistles remind me, complaining

    Of time and days, such is their betrayal

  25. يذكرني ديوان شعري وما به

    لقولك إلا السحر والدرر الغر

    My book of poetry reminds me, and what is in it

    Is only magic and precious pearls from your words

  26. تذكرني ذاك الزميل مجالسي

    وما هو إلا الشمس وهي له الفجر

    My companion reminds me of our sessions

    He is nothing but the sun, and dawn is his

  27. تذكرني كل الفضائل بالذي

    تحلى بها عقدا يشرفه النحر

    All the virtues remind me of the one

    Who was adorned by them like a necklace he honors

  28. وكانت به كالروض حسرا تناقطت

    على غصنها المهصور أورقها الخضر

    He was like a garden, sighing over its branches

    Its green leaves fell upon it

  29. وكان بك البيت الحسيني مفاخرا

    كذاك كذاك الفخر يتبعه الفخر

    With you, the Abbasid house was proud

    Thus is pride, followed by pride

  30. بكى الناصر المولى الأمير لدرّة

    من التاج ضاعت والمحل لها قفر

    Al-Nāṣir the king, the prince, cried for the pearl

    That was lost, and its place became empty

  31. وبيضتَ ما بيضت من صحف الورى

    ولولا لباس الحزن ما خطها الحبر

    You enlightened what you enlightened of the scripts of creation

    Were it not for the dress of sorrow, the pen would not have drawn them

  32. وأجريتَ للخضرا العيون دواميا

    عجبت لها خضرا وأدمعها حمر

    You let the greens flow constantly from your eyes

    I wonder at their greenness while their tears are red

  33. بكت تونس الخضرا على صالح كما

    بكت كاملا من قبلها أختها مصر

    Tunisia's greens cried over Ṣāliḥ as

    Egypt cried over Kāmil before it, its sister

  34. لها الحق ها قد حان حين افتقادها

    لمثلك أين المثل تبكي لها العذر

    It has the right - the time of missing it has come

    For the like of you, where is its equal? Excuses to cry are justified

  35. أمطنا على وجه البلاد خمارها

    كما تشتهي يا صالحٌ وبدا الأمر

    We covered the face of the country with its veil

    As you wish, O Ṣāliḥ, and the matter became clear

  36. وها نحن للدستور نسعى براية

    هلالية حمرا يحف بها النصر

    Of the crescent, red, surrounded by victory

    We remove the blindness from those eyes

  37. نُزيح على تلك العيون غشاوة

    ليبصر ذو حجر ويرتفع الحجر

    So that the stonehearted can see, and ignorance is lifted

    You see us, and stones of obstruction are trampled

  38. ترانا وأحجار العثار مداسة

    بأخمصنا بحرا له المد والجزر

    Under our feet, a sea with ebb and flow

    Its waves throw them as corpses

  39. وتقذفها أمواجه جيفا علت

    ويغلو بما تحويه أصدافه السعر

    And the sparks in its shells flare

    If the one sadly missed saw

  40. ولو شاهد المأسوف عنه جنابكم

    مناهضة الأحرار أسكره البشر

    The opposition of the free, cheer would intoxicate him

    When they imprison individuals, and you save them

  41. إذا سجنوا فردا ومنهم نجيكم

    تهنّي به الخضرا فيأخذه السكر

    The greens congratulate, taking the cheer

    Thus are the traits of those standing up for revival

  42. كذاك خصال القائمين بنهضة

    ومن طلب الحسناء لم يغله المهر

    And whoever seeks the beautiful one, the dowry does not tempt him

    The sweet is not good in the cup of disgrace

  43. وما العذب في كاس الهوان بسائغ

    ولكن بكأس العز يستعذب المر

    But in the cup of honor, the bitter is sweetened

    Without your eulogy, as you entrusted

  44. ودونك تأبينا كما كنت موصيا

    شفيعه في التأجيل مقضيّة النذر

    Its delay in fulfillment, a vow fulfilled

    None can eulogize your equal

  45. نظيرك تأبيني يعز نظيره

    فلا البحر مبديه إليهم ولا البر

    So neither land nor sea can lead them to you

    This is my letter, pages I have scattered

  46. وهذا كتابي طاقة قد نثرتها

    على قبرك الزاهي بها الشعر والنثر

    Upon your shining grave, with poetry and prose

    Recite its lines, O King of Mercy, over it

  47. فمر ملك الرحمان يتلو سطورها

    عليك وقل لا هم ربي لك الشكر

    And say: My Lord, for you is all thanks
