لا تفكر في طارف وتليد

فأنا لمالي بت طي لحودي

Do not think of a faded beauty,

For I have no interest in coquettish eyes.

قد جرد الإثراء عنّي سيفه

ولطالما فيه رفعت بنودي

Prosperity has stripped me of its sword,

And I have long raised my terms.

قدرت معنى الاقتصاد بمقتضى

قول الإله فكنت خير رشيج

I understood the meaning of thrift by

The word of God, so I was the best companion.

اسمي بتونس ذو اشتهار كلما

نوديت يا رمضان لبي جودي

My name is famous in Tunis whenever

I am called, O Ramadan, my generosity answers.

قد ساقني أجلي لباريسي التي

فيها التقيت بقاطع لوريدي

My fate has led me to Paris

Where I met the slitter of my veins.

فتلوت فيها إن من أموالكم

ورجعت منها عبرة لعتيد

I recited there, verily from your wealth

And I returned from it as a lesson for the future.

ولدى استوائي في الضريح رحمة

قال الغنى أرخت قبر شهيدي

And as I was buried in the shrine, mercy

Said: I have covered the grave of my martyr.
