1. يوم عظيم لم تلده الأزمنُ

    للّه منظره المسر المحزن

    A great day not born by time

    Its scene saddens and delights God

  2. يوم كساه الاستياء مهابة

    ساد السكون فأكبرته الأعين

    A day clothed with indignation and awe

    Silence prevailed, so eyes widened

  3. يوم بظاهره السكوت مخيّم

    نطقت ولكن بالصموت الألسن

    A day whose surface is covered with silence

    Tongues spoke but with muteness

  4. بلد بأجمعه تمثل صامتا

    الساكنون بأسرهم والمسكن

    A country entirely acting mute

    Inhabitants altogether still and settled

  5. مر في الطريق فلا ترى دون الفضا

    لم ينفتح باب بها أو روشن

    If you walk the street, you see naught but space

    No door in it opened or lit

  6. سل بي خبيرا عم أضحت تونس

    في ذا السبات وما بذلك توذن

    Ask me, o expert, about how Tunis

    Became so dormant and what it portends

  7. أنا من بنيها الطالبين حقوقها

    أنا ضمن من طلبوا الحقوق وأعلنوا

    I am one of its children seeking rights

    I am among those who sought rights and declared

  8. مرت سنوها الخمس في استجلائها

    عبثا وهم حرباءة تتلون

    Five years passed in its enlightenment

    In vain, they are fickle and ever-changing

  9. قالوا أخيرا قد عقدنا لجنة

    تعطي الحقوق وللمصالح تضمن

    Finally they said a committee was formed

    To grant rights and serve interests

  10. فإذا البوارق مزعجات حولها

    وبما ارتأى المستعمرون تقنّن

    Yet around it loomed threatening warships

    With laws made as colonists saw fit

  11. بلغ التحيز منتهاه وأظهرت

    دون اكتراث عندها ما تبطن

    Bias reached its peak, and it blatantly showed

    Without caring what it concealed inside

  12. خالوا ابتلاع الشعب أمرا هينا

    حتى بدا اليوم العصيب الهين

    They considered swallowing the people easy

    Until the painful, disgraceful day arrived

  13. ما ذنبه وهو الرصين تسامحا

    إلا لأنه تونسي مؤمن

    What was its crime, being forbearing and calm

    Except for being Tunisian and faithful?

  14. وصل التنازل منه في دركاته

    أقصاه واعجبي لمن لا يذعن

    Concessions reached their limit within its patience

    How strange, for those who do not yield

  15. استنهض الإرهاق فيه عزيمة

    لا تنثني شكرا لهم إذ أحسنوا

    Exhaustion stirred in it determination

    That will not bend; thanks to them for their favor

  16. الحق درعه وهو وحده قوّة

    لا يستهان بها وليست توهن

    Justice is its armor and its sole strength

    Not to be slighted and never weakened
