رأت أقوامها اغتصبت بلادي

فنازعت الحجى وغزت فؤادي

Her people saw my lands taken by force

So she disputed with me and raided my heart

تقاتلني النواعس عن فتور

فقلبي واللواحظ في جهاد

The glances blame me for my languor

Yet my heart and the glances are in struggle

أهيم بها ولم أحفل بعقب

وأهواها وإن عكست مرادي

I wander after her heedless of consequence

And love her though she opposes my will

أعظم شأنها حين اقترابي

وأحفظ عهدها حين ابتعادي

Mightiest is she when I draw near

And truest when far am I

وقالوا إنها زرقاء عين

فقلت القبح كله في السواد

They said, 'Blue of eye is she'

I said, 'All ugliness is in blackness'
