حياتك يا شعر ما بيننا

وحق المزامير ذات اعتبار

Your life, O poetry, is between us

By the right of psalms of significance

ففي كل عصر لها آية

وفي كل شيء عليها المدار

For in every age there is a miracle for it

And in everything it is pivotal

فإنك في كل ما لغة

لسحر البيان وكاس العقار

You are in everything a language

Of the magic of rhetoric and the cup of wine

وإنك في كل ما أمة

سهيل التقدم والاشتهار

And you are in every nation

Suhail of progress and fame

على الشعر أن تترجم عن

جنابك سابحة في البحار

It is upon poetry to translate from

Your side swimming in the seas

وهاك قياما بواجبه

مسامرة الشاذلي الخزندار

And here I am fulfilling my duty

Accompanying Al-Shadhili the treasurer

وأوليته الفخر يومئذ

فقال المؤرخ يوم افتخار

And I was given the honor that day

So said the historian on the day of pride
