بلادي فداك الروح والله عالم

عليك سلام خالص القصد سالم

My country, my soul is your ransom, and God is witness,

Peace be upon you, pure in intent and safe.

يحييك مشتاق على القرب مشفق

من البعد مشغوف بحبك هائم

A longing one greets you, anxious for you when near,

And when far, impassioned by your love, wandering distracted.

له فيك ألوان من الرأي عدة

فأبيض وضاح وأسود قاتم

He holds regarding you many diverse opinions:

Some are bright white, and some are pitch black.

تباكره في صبحه غير نائم

وتطرقه في ليله وهو نائم

They visit him in his morning while he is awake,

And they knock at his door in the night while he sleeps.

فآونة فيما يرى متفائل

وآونة فيما يرى متشائم

So at times, in what he sees, he is an optimist,

And at times, in what he sees, he is a pessimist.

على أن رأي الفال أقوى علائما

وتقوى الأماني حيث تقوى العلائم

Yet the opinion of optimism holds stronger signs,

And hopes grow strong where signs are strong.

فهذا بحمد الله للضاد موسم

كريم وعيد للعروبة باسم

For this, praise be to God, is a season for the Arabic tongue,

Generous, and a smiling feast for Arabism,

وحفل بهي للشبيبة زاهر

كروض ندي باكرته النسائم

And a splendid celebration for the youth, blooming,

Like a dewy garden visited early by the breezes.

تلاقى به أنصارها وحماتها

كما تتلاقى في السماء الغمائم

Its supporters and protectors met therein,

Just as clouds meet in the sky.

وطرب فيه الناشئون وغردوا

كما غردت فوق الغصون الحمائم

The young ones rejoiced in it and sang,

Just as doves sing above the branches.

فكل لياليها وأيامها لنا

ولائم لم تبرح تليها ولائم

So all its nights and days are ours,

Feasts that cease not to follow feasts.

تلاءم في الدين الحنيفي شملنا

فبات قريرا شملنا المتلائم

Our gathering was harmonized in the True Religion,

So our harmonized union became joyous and settled.

أبى الله إلا أن يضم قلوبنا

إليه وأنف الكفر خزيان راغم

God refused but to join our hearts together

Unto Him, while the nose of Disbelief is disgraced and dusty.

عطاء لنا من واسع الملك واسع

وفضل لنا من دائم الملك دائم

A gift to us from the Possessor of the Kingdom, vast,

And a favor to us from the Eternal King, eternal.

لقد شد بالإيمان عقد قلوبنا

وليس لعقد شده الله فاصم

He has tightened the knot of our hearts with Faith,

And for a knot God has tied, there is no breaker.

وبوأنا في العالمين مباءة

مباركة كالخلد لولا المزاحم

He settled us in the worlds in a dwelling,

Blessed like Paradise, were it not for the crowding intruder.

رياض دنت للطامعين قطوفها

فلم يمتنع منهم عن القطف طاعم

Gardens whose fruits hung low for the greedy,

So no eater among them refrained from picking.

هلم نذد عنها جوائح جمة

تهددها من حولنا وتهاجم

Come, let us drive away from it many calamities,

That threaten it from around us and attack.

هلم نذد عنها نسورا حوائما

عسى تنجلي عنها النسور الحوائم

Come, let us drive away hovering vultures,

Perhaps the hovering vultures will clear away.

سخونا فسامتنا بكل إذاية

سوائم بالمكروه فينا سوائم

We were lenient, so they imposed upon us every harm,

Grazing beasts grazing on us with detested acts.

مراتعنا للناجعين خصيبة

وأكنافنا للنازلين نواعم

Our pastures are fertile for those who seek benefit,

And our shelters are soft for those who descend upon them.

حوت أعظما للأولين رميمة

أثاراتها في الأخرين عظائم

It contains the decayed bones of the ancients,

Whose traces are great among the later generations.

حوت أمة ذانت بدين محمد

وسارت على البيضاء والليل فاحم

It contained a nation that submitted to the religion of Muhammad,

And walked upon the clear path while the night was coal-black.

لقد كانت الأجداد أسدا ضراغما

بها، فهل الأحفاد أسد ضراغم؟

The ancestors were indeed fierce lions

Within it; so are the descendants fierce lions?

إلى الحق ولوا أيها القوم وجهكم

إلى الحق لا يأخذكم فيه لائم

Turn your faces toward the Truth, O people,

To the Truth; let no blamer sway you regarding it.

فما ضاع حق للمحامين واجد

ولا ذاع حق للمحامين عادم

For no right is lost if it has a finder among defenders,

Nor does a right spread if it lacks a defender.

هلم نبن عن حقنا في بلادنا

فكم فيه مرتاب وكم فيه واهم

Come, let us express clearly our right in our land,

For how many doubt it, and how many are deluded.

علام بغى الباغي بها غمط حقنا

أنحن جمادات بها أم بهائم؟!

Why did the oppressor seek to belittle our right in it?

Are we inanimate objects in it, or beasts?!

وما الحق إلا كهرباء خفية

لها القول سلك والعقول قوائم

Truth is but a hidden electricity,

Speech is its wire, and minds are the posts.

فقل لضرير القلب لا تك واجما

فليس يقيك الضر أنك واجم

So say to the blind of heart: do not be despondent,

For your despondency will not protect you from harm.

ومن أين يدري الناس ضرك بينهم

وأنت له في جانب الصدر كاتم

And how would people know of your injury among them,

While you conceal it in the side of your chest?

وقل لبني قومي: دعوا الجبن وانهضوا

لفك رقاب أثقلتها الأداهم

And say to the sons of my people: Leave cowardice and rise

To break necks weighed down by shackles.

وقولوا لآتي العدل إنك عادل

وقولوا لآتي الظلم إنك ظالم

And say to the comer of justice: You are just,

And say to the comer of injustice: You are a tyrant.

هلم نعارك فالحياة معارك

هلم نقاحم فالحياة مقاحم

Come let us fight, for life is battles,

Come let us rush into danger, for life is dangerous undertakings.

هلم نثر في المؤمنين جميعهم

دويا له مثل الرعود دمادم

Come let us stir up among all believers

A reverberation that has rumbles like thunder.

هلم نبع لله ما ابتاع منهم

ففي البيع أرباح لنا غنائم

Come let us sell to God what He has bought from them,

For in the sale there are profits and spoils for us.

هلم بني قومي إلى المجد نعله

فنحن له منذ القديم دعائم

Come, sons of my people, to glory—let us ascend it,

For we have been its pillars since ancient times.

هلم بني قومي إلى الذكر نمله

ففي الذكر أخلاق سمت ومكارم

Come, sons of my people, to the Remembrance—let us dictate it,

For in the Remembrance are morals that soared and noble deeds.

ولست أرى القرآن الا مناجما

أتدرون ما تحوي عليه المناجم

I see the Quran only as rich mines;

Do you know what the mines contain?

على الدين والدنيا وعلميهما معا

شهودا وغيبا فهو بالكفل قائم

Containing religion and the world and the knowledge of both,

Visible and unseen, it stands as a guarantor.

فربوا عليه الناشئين تلح لهم

به طرف مشروعة ومعالم

So raise the youth upon it, and there will appear to them

Through it legitimate paths and landmarks.

وفي سبل التمكين جدوا وزاحموا

سواكم فما خاب المجد المزاحم

And in the paths of empowerment, strive and crowd the others,

For the diligent crowder never fails to reach glory.

وفي سبل التعليم أعطوا دراهما

ففي سبل التعليم تعطى الدراهم

And in the paths of education, give dirhams,

For in the paths of education, dirhams are well given.

ومن يوق شح النفس لم يك آثما

ولا خاسرا إن باء بالخسر آثم

And whoever is saved from the greed of his soul is not a sinner,

Nor a loser, even if the sinner returns with loss.

أحيي نفوسا بالسخاء طوافحا

عليهن من صدق الاخاء خواتم

I salute souls overflowing with generosity,

Upon whom are the seals of true brotherhood.

سقى الله حزب المصلحين سواجما

من النعم العظمى علتها سواجم

May God water the party of reformers with pouring rain,

Of great blessings, topped by even more pouring rain.

رغبنا بهم عن حاتم وحديثه

ففي كل فرد منهم اليوم حاتم

Through them, we lost interest in Hatim and his tales,

For in every individual among them today is a Hatim.

ألا في سبيل البر أيد كريمة

لهم ونهى مشحوذة وعزائم

Indeed, in the path of righteousness are generous hands

Belonging to them, and sharpened intellects and determinations.

هنيئا لكم أهل التبرع والندى

مغانم أجر لم تشبها مغارم

Congratulations to you, people of donation and generosity,

Spoils of reward untainted by penalties.

سيشهد شهر الصوم خير شهادة

لكم وتزكيه الشهور القوادم

The month of fasting will bear the best witness

For you, and the coming months will validate it.

فلا تك يا ابن الدين بالصوم هازئا

ففيه حدود جمة ومحارم

So do not be, O son of the Religion, mocking of the Fast,

For in it are many limits and prohibitions.

تصرم شهر الصوم إلا أقله

وأوشك أن ينأى الأنيس المنادم

The month of fasting has passed except a little,

And the sociable companion is about to depart.

فهل أنت ساع بالهواجر دائب

وهل أنت سار في الدياجير حازم؟

So are you striving in the midday heat, diligent?

And are you walking in the darkness, resolute?

وهل أنت راج في أجورك راغب

وهل أنت باك من ذنوبك نادم

And are you hoping for your rewards, desirous?

And are you weeping over your sins, regretful?

وهل صمت هذا الشهر لله مؤمنا

ومحتسبا تعفو به وتسالم

Did you fast this month for God, believing,

And seeking reward, forgiving and making peace?

وقلت لمن ناجاك بالبر ناجني

وقلت لمن هاجاك إني صائم؟

Did you say to the one who whispered righteousness: Whisper to me,

And say to the one who provoked you: I am fasting?

ألا هل لنا يا شهر فيك مراشد

ألا هل لنا يا شهر فيك مراحم؟

O Month, do we have guidance in you?

O Month, do we have mercies in you?

تروح وتغدو في الجزائر كلها

أوازم للصبر الجميل هوازم

Crises come and go throughout all of Algeria,

Crises that defeat beautiful patience.

فمن محدق بالجند ما هو ثائر

الى مودع في السجن ما هو جارم

From one surrounded by soldiers, though not a rebel,

To one deposited in prison, though not a criminal.

وفي تونس الخضراء شمل مبدد

وفي المغرب الأقصى أذى متفاقم

And in Green Tunisia, a scattered gathering,

And in Morocco, escalating harm.

وفي المقدس الباكي الحزين فضائع

توالت وأنكاد طغت ومآثم

And in the weeping, sad Jerusalem are atrocities

That followed in succession, and miseries that overwhelmed, and sins.

فيا شهر هل في الأرض يكشف كربنا

ويبعث فيها مجدنا المتقادم؟

O Month, will our distress be uncovered on earth?

And our ancient glory resurrected in it?

وهل يبسط الإسلام في الأرض ظله

وتنتشر الفصحى وتعلو العمائم؟

Will Islam spread its shadow on the earth?

And will standard Arabic spread, and the turbans rise?

ويا شهر هل تعطى الجزائر حقها

ويفرج عنها ضيقها المتلاحم؟

O Month, will Algeria be given its right?

And will its cohesive distress be relieved?

وهل تلتقي فيها القلوب على الرضى

وتخطئها أحقادها والسخائم

Will hearts meet therein upon contentment?

And will its hatreds and rancor miss it?

وهل ترتقي فيها العقول وتنتقي

من العلم حظا للعقول يلائم؟

Will minds ascend therein and select

From knowledge a share that befits minds?

بلى سوف يحيي الله كل ربوعها

فتزكو بواديها وتزهو العواصم

Yes, God will revive all its quarters,

So its valleys will thrive and capitals flourish.

ومنا لها في الخوف حام وحارس

ومنا لها في الحيف كاف وناقم

From us, for her in fear, is a protector and guard,

And from us, for her in injustice, is a defender and avenger.

ومنا لواء في الميامين خافق

ومنا شهاب للشياطين راجم

From us is a banner fluttering among the blessed,

And from us is a meteor stoning the devils.

ومنا جبال في الحلوم شوامخ

ومنا بحار في العلوم خضارم

From us are mountains, towering in wisdom,

And from us are oceans, vast in sciences.

وهبتك روحي يا جزائر فأمري

كما شئت إني خاضع لك خادم

I have gifted you my soul, O Algeria, so command

As you wish; I am submissive to you, a servant.

حماك ربيع لي وإن كان جاحما

علي وهل يصلي خليلك جاحم؟

Your sanctuary is a spring to me, even if it is a blazing fire

Upon me; and does a fire burn your friend?

وقرباك هم قرباي لست مباليا

أعاريب هم في جنسهم أم أعاجم؟

Your kin are my kin, I do not care

Whether they are Arabs in their race or non-Arabs.

فخذ من دمي يا ابن الجزائر إنني

أخ لك في كل الحظوظ مقاسم

So take from my blood, O son of Algeria, for I am

A brother to you, sharing in all fortunes.

ويشهد لي بالصدق قلبي فإنني

عليه لو استكشفت لاسمك راسم

My heart testifies to my truth, for I am

Upon it, if you uncovered it, sketching your name.

وجسمي ففيما يبتنيك هشمته

بكدي وإن لم تدر أني هاشم

And my body, in what builds you up, I have shattered it

With my toil, even if you did not know I am shattering it.

فكن واثقا بالصدق مني فأنني

زعيم بقول الصدق ما أنا زاعم

So be confident in the truth from me, for I am

A guarantor of speaking the truth, not a pretender.

وكن راجيا للخير مني فما أنا

على فعل شيء من سوى الخير عازم

And be hopeful of good from me, for I am not

Resolved on doing anything other than good.

فإن تلتمس عفوي فإني باذل

وان تستثرغيظي فإني كاظم

If you seek my pardon, I grant it,

And if you provoke my anger, I suppress it.

نمتنا أصول في الحياة وثيقة

فلا تصر منا بالظنون الصوارم

Firm roots in life have bound us together,

So do not cut the sharp ties between us with suspicions.

أعيذك من دنيا الغرور وشرها

وما شرها إلا عن الظلم ناجم

I seek refuge for you from the world of delusion and its evil,

For its evil stems only from injustice.

فطب واستقم كالعود إن تك صاليا

بنار وإن يعجمك بالغمر عاجم

So be good and stand straight like incense wood, if you are burning

In fire, and if a tester tests you with adversity.

إذا كان حظ النفس للناس ناثرا

فإن لهم حق الأخوة ناظم

If the fortune of the self scatters people,

Then the right of brotherhood organizes them.

أصرح أحيانا بقصدي واضحا

وألحن أحيانا فهل أنت فاهم؟

Sometimes I declare my intent clearly,

And sometimes I speak in metaphors; do you understand?

أراك أخي ما زلت وسنان حالما

تيقظ إلى كم أنت وسنان حالم؟

I see you, my brother, still drowsy and dreaming;

Wake up! For how long will you be drowsy and dreaming?

تيقظ ففي دنياك أعظم نهضة

تضيق بمعناها اللغى والتراجم

Wake up, for in your world is a great renaissance,

The meaning of which languages and translations are too narrow to contain.

وجاهد فإن الحر فيها مجاهد

وقاوم فإن الحر فيها مقاوم

Struggle, for the free man in it is a struggler,

And resist, for the free man in it is a resister.

وقم فابن ذكرا عالي الصيت ماجدا

كريما أواسيه الرجال الأكارم

Rise and build a reputation of high fame and glory,

Noble, on which noble men establish their foundations.

ولا تأس أن صادفت في الناس هادما

له فسيبني الله ما هو هادم

Do not grieve if you encounter a destroyer among people

Of it, for God will build what he is destroying.

سيغنيك حكم الله عن حكم غيره

وحسبك أن الله بالحق حاكم

God's judgment will suffice you over the judgment of others,

And it is enough for you that God judges with the Truth.
